The annual Family Prosperity Index is out and, while New Hampshire didn’t make the Top 10 (it’s ranked #16), the study’s authors did use the Granite State to make their case for more economic liberty vs. reliance on government. They used the case study of New Hampshire and its neighbor, Maine (FPI ranking: #39).

The result of Maine’s dancing with the tax devil in the “blue” moon light? More government, a shrinking private sector, and one of the highest dependency cultures in the nation.

HB 628: Coos County Reps Vote to Tax Your Income.

I am dismayed that the entire Coös County delegation, both Democrat, and Republican, voted for an income tax on all non-public employees, via House Bill 628, the “Family Medical Leave Insurance” bill. The only exceptions were Robert Theberge, who voted nay, Bing Judd, who didn’t vote, and Edith Tucker, who was excused.

Supporters deny that it is an income tax, but it literally requires that employers collect and remit a percentage of employees’ wages: that is the very definition of an income tax.

Congratulations to Viola Katusiime, Granite State Organizing Project’s (GSOP) Family, and Economic Security Organizer. She’s been waiting a year, and her H-1B visa was finally approved.

I’m no expert on non-immigration or H-1B visa’s, but I can read and agitating to advance mostly left-wing priorities, even with the best of intentions, does not appear to me to be one of the qualifying factors.

Don’t Like NH’s Property Taxes? Then Move to Maine

Skip took some time to fisk a letter to the Concord Monitor in which someone named John Andrews complains about the high property taxes in New Hampshire. He notes that across the border in Maine, he’d be paying a lot less in property taxes.

Skip does a great job exposing the fallacies upon which Andrews makes his case, and rightly points out that Maine has lots of other taxes that John never mentions. But he doesn’t have space to show how vast the chasm of the overall tax burden is between Maine and New Hampshire.

It’s Yuge.

Coos County Republican Committee refuses Scott Brown PAC Donation

At the monthly meeting held on 15 May 2014, the Coos County Republican Committee became the first committee in the state to refuse to accept a donation by the Scott Brown PAC. Mr Brown, who is running for the US Senate in the primary against 3 other contenders, has donated a large sum of money through his PAC to each county committee. In the course of the meeting on Thursday, every member of the committee present was given the opportunity to discuss their views on the matter, after which a vote was taken.

Chairman Eric Catman stated ” While we understand the donation came with no strings attached, our committee must maintain total impartiality until after the primary. This impartiality must not only be maintained, but be SEEN to be maintained, and accepting this donation would have compromised that. We felt our integrity as a committee could have been called into question and so while we thank Mr Brown and his PAC for their efforts, we must respectfully decline.”

Actually, the other Tom Brady can’t be  an NH-GOP voting Committee member either but let us not get distracted.

NH-GOP Bylaws, Article 1, section 4A:

A.  Any registered Republican who, at the same time joins or allows his or her name to be used in support of a political committee or a defined group of individuals, that in title or effect is intended to be understood by the public to be a committee or group comprised in whole or in part of members of the Republican Party endorsing a candidate for elected office from another political party, when there is a candidate nominated by the Republican Party for that office, shall be disqualified during the then present and the next biennium from holding an office of the State Committee or any County or City Committee, from being a member of the Executive Committee and from being a member of the State Committee.

So why can’t Republican County Commissioner Tom Brady be a voting member of the Republican State Committee?

…might want to update their web site. The elected candidates page lists their US Senators as Jeanne Shaheen and Judd Gregg. That’s a bit out of date, unless you just want to wait until we kick Shaheen out of office and you can change them both at the same time. Just trying to be helpful.

We Just Need A Tax Structure That Would Allow it To Be Accessed For Government Use

I was doing my promised duty to screen scrape the million or so (hyperbole) comments by Gaia from the Concord Monitor Web site –who, by the way, seems almost reasonable for a Democrat–when I came across this.
