“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes”—Mark Twain
Reading Steve MacDonald’s entry, “You Can’t Be A Republican And Vote Against Right To Work“…caused me to once again step back and reevaluate the public debate about Right-to-Work. I opened House Bill 474 and carefully read it again…and again…I could find no provision within the Legislation that abolished Unions. I read it yet again…. I could find no provision within the Bill that restricted, outlawed or otherwise “busted” Unions. Not one.
Several reasons brought me to revisit this. First, there seem to be many Republicans who fancy themselves “liberty-minded conservatives yet they support statutory Union oppression; Second, The strident opposition, bad behavior, swearing and threatening by Police and Fire over this bill has created a loss of confidence and apprehension within the communities they serve. Finally, What Unions say about this bill is absolute nonsense and nothing more than bold-faced lies.
Yet, one of the most sobering examples I encounterd was while I attended the Live Free or Die Rally in Jaffrey the last week in August. I met an individual who appeared outwardly to embrace the mantle of liberty…except, of course the right-to-work. In other words, he is a fraud…a liar…a Hypocrite.
presently in the Granite State, people may not be compelled to join a Union or pay “Union dues” as a condition of employment or continued employment. However, everybody employed in a Union shop is required to pay Agency Fees” to cover collective bargaining costs of the Union. Consequently, under present labor laws, no discretion for the non-union member exists in refusing to pay such fees. Right-to-work legislation remedies just that. It places the discretion of Union membership and agency fees squarely in the hands of the individual worker.
In the current labor template Unions seek to maintain force of law by government to compel workers to pay agency fees…which are frequently close or equal to actual Union dues. The assertion from Union advocates is always the same: ” We bargain and negotiate for the wages and benefits…and those negotiations incur costs…” Yeah…right….(see, COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF AMERICA ET AL. v. BECK ET AL.) The counter argument is, “I, the worker chose not to join a Union…I do not want nor need the Union to negotiate or advocate on my behalf…I do not want to financially support political activities I am fundamentally opposed to..” “To bad…that’s the way it is…” so say the Unions.
GraniteGROK entries on this topic such as the aforementioned by my colleague Steve MacDonald, inevitably draw union defender asserting, “Such fees are not ever used for political purposes….” We know that not to be true where Unions are the single most well-heeled political contributors to leftist Democratic political campaigns.
Steve MacDonald is completely on point and he clearly demonstrates how personal individual greed is perfectly acceptable and okay with these so-called “Republicans” These RINO’s who vehemently object to force of government and the nanny-state meddling in our lives, except for the forced shake-down of workers to pay these Agency fees. That is just okay and fine by them…
