I recently received an email from ACLU offering me a code to purchase items at a discount from their online store. When I visited the ACLU store, I discovered an I Read Banned Books Tote listed for sale with the description, “For nearly 100 years, we have opposed censorship in all its forms.” I thought, “how quaint” since the ACLU has switched sides on the issue of censorship.

In November 2020, ACLU Deputy Director for Transgender Justice Chase Strangio tweeted that stopping the circulation of the book “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters” by Abigail Shrier is “100% a hill I will die on.”
As a trans-identifying person, Chase objected to Shrier educating parents and the community about Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD) and how it is spreading like wildfire among kids and teens and leading them down the path to irreversible damage to their bodies with puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries to remove healthy body parts to give them a facsimile of the body of the opposite sex.

Strangio didn’t apologize, although she claimed that the tweet about stopping the book’s circulation was a joke. If the ACLU were serious about opposing censorship, they would have insisted that Strangio make a public apology to Shrier and, if she refused, ACLU should have fired Strangio and made an apology themselves. Instead, the ACLU pretended that none of it happened.
Also, when Ryan T. Anderson’s book “When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment,” a critique of the trans movement, was removed from Amazon’s bookstore, the ACLU didn’t make a peep. Amazon is so big that this comes very close to censoring that book and makes it likely in the future that such books won’t be published because of the possible loss of that market.
There was also the ACLU-NH staff member that burned Harry Potter books and the time that ACLU-NH lobbied against freedom of speech outside abortion facilities.
After all of that, selling tote bags about banned books makes the ACLU seem pitiful.
