Who knew? Maine Senator Susan Collins on “card check”

card check

For some time now, we have been closely following the progress of the deceptively named Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) or, as it is more commonly known– "card check"– as it wends its way through Congress. Noted in several prior posts and discussed on our Saturday radio program, this legislation eliminates the secret ballot presently available to workers when it comes to the question of unionization. As you might suspect, Democrats are mostly in favor of its passage, given their long-time relationship with labor unions in general, and it has been up to the Republicans to stand in the way of passage of this onerous legislation. While certainly overshadowed by the present fiscal chaos dominating the news cycle, this issue has turned out to be one of the major topics of discussion in some of this year’s most closely contested Senate races.

Certainly the subject has found its way into the Sununu/Shaheen race, with our friends at Granite Staters for Employee Freedom pushing the issue every chance they get at various campaign events and meetings throughout the state.

What you might not have known (like me) is that, in addition to Senator Sununu being on the right side of this important issue, another New England Republican in a close re-election race is right there too: Susan Collins. That’s right– while you’re probably like me in thinking that the Maine Republican Senator is not nearly conservative enough when it comes to certain matters, it turns out she is absolutely right when it comes to her position regarding EFCA. In fact, during a recent debate against her Democratic challenger she literally knocked it out of the park when questioned on "card check". Said Senator Collins, in response to a question as to where she stands:

I am strongly opposed to taking away the guarantee of a secret ballot when workers are deciding whether or not to organize.

She then provided some details that clearly demonstrates her grasp of what is at stake:

Refineries? Nope!                              Assault on Seabrook. May 1, 1977

Back in the 80’s, former NH House Speaker Marshall Cobleigh spent many a Sunday morning debating future Governor Jeanne Shaheen on a number of issues. At the time, the battle over the Seabrook Station nuclear power raged on, with the sides plainly split along partisan lines. Republicans favored the facility and Democrats opposed it. As reported in this post earlier this week, The NHGOP has released several YouTube videos showing Shaheen and Cobleigh going at it over the issue. At the time of the original airing, according to GOP state party chair Fergus Cullen,

she was organizing the radical anti-nuclear community in support of former Portsmouth Mayor Paul McEachern’s 1988 gubernatorial campaign. Shaheen served as the campaign manager and senior advisor to Paul McEachern, an extreme nuclear opponent, in both his 1986 and 1988 bids for the corner office.

[Mr. Cobleigh appeared on our radio program this past Saturday. Click here to download the podcast.]

Today he held a press conference to discuss the matter in response to what the Shaheen camp has had to say about the 1987 video:

STATEMENT OF FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER MARSHALL COBLEIGH
AND NEW HAMPSHIRE ENERGY CHIEF 1973 – 1978
DELIVERED AT PRESS CONFERENCE
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 22 AT THE LOB, CONCORD NH

I called this press conference because I was appalled at my long-time television adversary Jeanne Shaheen’s blatent attempt to rewrite and completely distort her record regarding the use of nuclear power and to point out Shaheen’s factual record as a long-time opponent of nuclear power, as well as her failed record as a big-taxing, big-spending governor who left office with a huge budget deficit of $300 million.  Just exactly the type of person we don’t need representing NH in the US Senate.

First of all, I want to address her campaign’s claim that the tapes now on U-tube that I lent to the Republican party “were taken out of context, and these clips are over 20 years old.”

The facts are that the tapes are from 1987 …. 21 years ago.

That’s the point.  Jeanne Shaheen has been a consistent opponent of nuclear power and oil drilling, where there is oil, for 25 years before her latest poll led to her switch of positions.

It is also a fact that nothing is taken out of context.  That is exactly what she said on the show and exactly what I said.  I challenge Jeanne Shaheen to demonstrate clearly what she claims is taken out of context.  We were on the weekly show for about 10 years.  The facts are that Jeanne Shaheen constantly harped about her distaste for nuclear power.  I know it.  And she knows it.

I just don’t have the rest of the tapes to prove it.

I also challenge Jeanne Shaheen to put up or shut up.  I am willing to let any member of the press examine these tapes and verify that nothing is taken out of context.

The Shaheen spokesman also claims “what Jeanne Shaheen has CONSISTENTLY SAID …. that nuclear power is a part of our energy mix…. but we should not subsidize it, and WE SHOULD NOT EXPAND IT  until we have a safe way to deal with the waste.”

That is typical Jeanne Shaheen, trying to have it both ways.  She gives the appearance of changing her life-long position and at the same time appeasing her clamshall friends with the qualifier
about nuclear waste.

I also challenge Jeanne Shaheen to provide to the press any documentation showing that she has “CONSISTENTLY SAID over the years that nuclear power should be a part of our energy mix.”

Most of you know that in the past 3 or 4 months Jeanne Shaheen has outlined a 6-point energy plan and 3 NH op-ed pieces THAT DO NOT MENTION her sudden feigned support for nuclear power.

The Shaheens are famous for political dirty tricks.  You will remember that Jeanne Shaheen’s husband Bill Shaheen was fired from Hillary Clinton’s campaign for his anything-goes campaign dirty tricks of raising the issue of Barack Obama’s drug use.

The facts are that Secretary of Energy James Schlessinger told the nation’s Energy Chiefs  20 years ago, “There are at least 20 ways to solve the nuclear waste for 20,000 years but the politicians won’t make the choice of which way to use.”  France, which gets 80% of its electricity from nuclear power, chose to recycle and reuse nuclear waste but the Democrat-controlled congress put a ban on that technique just as they also banned off-shore oil drilling beyond the Gulf of Mexico.  Today we store nuclear waste at Seabrook Station because the Democrat-controlled congress lacks the courage to choose which of the 20 safe ways to use.

The most astounding statement Jeanne Shaheen made on the few tapes I have, came after I said,

“…. and if we don’t have nuclear power in this country we are going to become more and more vulnerable to the Arabs in the mid east, and that’s why WE ARE IN DANGER OF WAR, because we are not taking care of our energy dependence.”

To which Shaheen responded,

“that argument just doesn’t wash.”

Jeanne Shaheen was dead wrong.

The facts are that my 1987 comments were prescient.  We did end up in a mid-east war caused by Jeanne Shaheen, and her fellow NIMBY (not in my back yard) and NOPE (no
t on planet earth) fellow travelers, along with their Democrat allies in congress.  To have the unmitigated gall to blame the war entirely on President Bush and try to tie all Republican candidates to President Bush’s unpopularity caused by the war is the height of chutzpah.

I believe that Jeanne Shaheen is making these blatently-false statements to hide from her atrocious record on energy, spending, and taxation.

I enclose a documentation of Jeanne Shaheen’s sorry record on energy, taxes, and spending, which I shall not read so that we have time for any questions from you folks

These attachments [below] of Jeanne Shaheen’s record clearly show that Shaheen shifts positions more often than a windmill in a hurricane:

Live Free or Die? Lately, it seems NH’s cops are seeking to stamp out that first part and (sometimes) actually invoke the second notion…

Welcome to New Hampshire… the Live Free or Die Police State.

roadblock

Welcome! You’re guilty!

Now, I’m all for gettin’ the bad guys, so don’t get me wrong as you read this post. What I’m NOT for is an ever expanding POLICE State, with growing powers of law enforcement creating an inverse shrinking of our freedom. Lately here in the Granite State, this appears to be exactly what’s happening.

First, we’ve got these paramilitary police groups called "special operations units" that have sprung up all around. These quasi-public law enforcement units, lacking the usual oversight by elected officials have, in the name of "homeland security" grown into organizations that appear to be mini-armies, complete with vehicles that resemble battle tanks. While I’m all for getting to and stopping terrorists, the fact is, there haven’t been that many here in NH, so these mini-"militias" have turned inward against the population. After all, an "army" that is fully trained for action cannot long stand still without "chafing at the bit" for something to do. It’s when they don those ski masks and head out into the night that trouble starts…

NH cop wear

What I’m talking about, of course, is the raid on the family in Bristol by the Central NH Special Operations Unit during which innocent family members were held handcuffed in their own home for an hour and a half. Click here to read the full story of how 23 (!) "police officers" (twenty wearing masks hiding their identities) smashed down the door to the apartment in order to execute an arrest warrant for a seventeen year old family member.

And of course there’s the other botched raid in Charlestown NH by another of these so-called "special operations units" where one state trooper was shot, and a man wound up dead. While the AG called the killing "justified" (aren’t they all?), there are many questions swirling around, and even the NH State Police are questioning whether there are inherent built-in problems with these "non-profit" regional agencies that seemingly answer to nobody.

And then there’s another relatively new phenomena here in the "Live Free or Die" state: the so-called "sobriety checkpoint." The lunchroom discussion at work lately has included this topic, as there have been many in these parts– we read the "heads-up" printed in the papers… and the "results" reported after the fact. What we have found interesting in our daily chats on the subject is the fact that the "checkpoints" seem to net relatively few DWIs (which, don’t get me wrong, I want drunks OFF the roads) while yielding a number of other charges for other offenses. One news report about an area checkpoint reported that, in addition to a number of alcohol and drug arrests, drivers were charged with

operating without a valid license, child restraints, and unregistered vehicle violations as well as 11 warnings for equipment violations.

Sounds like a general sweep to me. Live Free or Die? Not hardly. And the problem is that, while some of the law enforcement persons operating these checkpoints act in a polite, efficient manner that seeks to inconvenience the innocent motorist as little as possible, others, not so. And in some instances, citizens of the "Live Free or Die State" are considered guilty of something, without cause, and must suffer the temporary loss of time and freedom, in the "hope" that, while held at the roadblock, a la Nazi style, they can somehow prove themselves innocent.

Auburn, NH Police checkpoint

Show me zee paperz. Vat ess een your vagon? Shnell!

So it was for a ‘Grok reader that was run though the gauntlet at a checkpoint conducted by the Auburn, NH police department this past Friday evening on Route 28. What follows is the account of what happened to a 19 year old girl and her 21 year old boyfriend after they left a pleasant evening at Canobie Lake Park and headed home. "Free"? You be the judge. Innocent until proven guilty? No way.. it’s just the opposite. Here’s their story:

Race debate in Central NH. “Negro 101” Part 2. Striking back…

Democrat Seal

Following up on this previous posting, in which the local Democrats here in Central NH have decided to take a local letter-writer "to task" for daring to be critical of the latest version of Barack Obama and, more importantly to local and state level Dems, daring to use the word "negro". As I noted in the first post, the local Dem chair put out the call, and several people dutifully responded, and the local papers have carried letters in which the original letter-writer, Mr. Jack Stephenson– who voted for Obama in the NH primary, by the way– has been trashed and berated for having the audacity to speak his mind in a way that the thought-police have deemed politically incorrect. Recall the Polidoro letter in the first post where he writes,

Stephenson shows his implied bigotry and ignorance

This is pretty much the tack taken by the Dems as they continue to beat this drum. Thankfully, there are other locals (myself included) that know Mr. Stephenson and can attest he is neither a bigot nor is he ignorant. Several people, knowing he was getting a bum rap, stepped up and defended him with letters of their own, and Stephenson wrote another letter rather ably defending himself as well. In the end, we all know this was nothing more than a tempest in a teapot, with the local Dems hoping to gin up emotion as they seek to promote their candidate, whose lack of experience and new ideas dictates voters must be distracted from that fact if he is to have a chance at victory in November…

To the Editor,

Once again Jack Polidoro proves that a good education can give a person intelligence but does very little to reduce ignorance. His supportive opinions of Obama are properly placed in an “opinion” column even though Obama’s recent appearance at California’s Saddleback Church proves that the man is an empty suit and without a scripted speech he can’t answer “real” questions on “real issues. Mr. Polidoro’s ignorance comes to light when he provides an irrelevant history on the term “Negro”.  This, of course, is from the Obama supporters’ play book on racial accusations against anyone who points out Obama’s ineptness.

For the most part, only the hypersensitive “PC” American culture has shunned the word Negro. When you travel to most any other part of the planet, people of color aren’t offended when referred to as a Negro, which of course is the Spanish word for “black”. Obviously, everyone is aware that the really bad “N” word is unacceptable in any culture. The term “African American” is completely inaccurate because not all people of color are from Africa. In fact, most of the people of color that I’ve met are actually from America and proud of it.

During my travels through Europe, Mexico, South America and Asia I wanted to be very careful to learn such nuances while conducting business and socializing with the various cultures. I actually found most Europeans to be more “crass” when discussing other ethnic groups, including Caucasians living elsewhere in the world. I was mostly referred to as the American, White guy or in Latin America, the “Gringo”.

In general, most of the people I meet throughout my travels posses a great sense of humor – which is something that Mr. Polidoro’s high intellect has difficulty understanding.

I’m positive that Mr. Polidoro will respond with another irrelevant “put us to sleep” tome on Black history but as usual it won’t square with the reality of every day life, no matter how many times he says it. Much like his “opinions” of Obama!

Terry Stewart
Gilford, NH

Next came one from our very own Skip, also taking the Dems to task. Keep in mind through all of this that there are two "Jacks" involved here– one, Mr. Jack Stephenson, the original letter writer, and Jack Politboro Polidoro, the consummate liberal blowhard that fancies himself an intellectual. Here, Skip starts out addressing Jack STEPHENSON, who he defends quite nicely as well:

Democrats ignite race debate in Central NH’s Lakes Region. Part One: “Negro 101”

Democrat Seal

An interesting debate about the "presumptive" Democratic nominee taking place here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire in our local papers and in cyberspace has escalated into a full blown debate over race, language, and political correctness. It all started when one of the local wags– a Democrat "seasoned citizen"– submitted a letter to several local papers. It’s author, Mr. Jack Stephenson, is well known to me and is someone I’ve always found thoughtful, humorous, and honest almost to a fault– he speaks his mind, and makes no apologies. Well, except when he puts forth his thoughts and later concludes he was mistaken… then, unlike most, he goes out of his way to admit it, and lets everyone know he was wrong with whatever previous mistaken position.

Here’s what Jack had to say in the letter printed in the Citizen and Laconia Daily Sun newspapers earlier this week. Keep in mind, he has long been known for his not-always PC, but truthful letters, always with a touch of Yankee humor:

To The Editor,

It is clear that IF we all had the knowledge about Obama which we have heard since he got the "nomination" (not confirmed until their convention), Hillary would be the Democrat candidate. But back then we didn’t know that brilliant Obama could not speak intelligently without his staff prepared cue cards. Back then we didn’t know that he opposed any increase in safe, clean, cheap energy sources (long proven nuclear, wind, solar and clean coal). Back then we didn’t know that he would propose the biggest tax increase ever in the US! Back then some of us thought that he was the same as most USA negros, but he is NOT, and he has become a total insult to our great successful negros in the USA. Back then we didn’t know that he was both against the Iraq war and for it, both against battles in Afganistan and for it, and wants to greatly increase number of our troops in Afganistan (the most dangerous place on earth). He is totally for WAR and totally against war, totally for outrageous taxes and totally against taxes, totally for 100% control of all medical care, and totally oppossed to government control of health care.

It is absolutely clear that Obama is totally for and totally against every issue which Americans are concerned with. IE, he is the ultimate politician, as his Church Pastor long ago told us!

Honesty, practicallity, need, usefulness, has nothing to do with Obama. Clearly, Obama is trying to steal from Clinton the title of the world’s best LIAR! Hillary tried that, but Obama beat her out for that title.

We must encourage Hillary to take the nomination away from misleading Obama, and give the nation a chance for a fair election. It can happen, and if it doesn’t, we are in for a "Hollywood style" president!

Jack Stephenson

Gilford

Well… You just know that that letter certainly caught the eye of the readers locally, including that of the local Democrat Party leaders, most of whom, like their hero Obama, cannot accept the slightest bit of criticism, and immediately cry foul when it occurs. Call Obama unfit to lead? Bigotry! Question his qualifications? How dare we doubt his patriotism! Note his liberal record? Racist! The chair of the Laconia, NH Democrats sounded the alarm in the daily emailed communiqué:

By the way, I don’t know how many of you saw the letter to the editor in the Laconia Citizen yesterday from Gilford’s Jack Stephenson complaining about Obama.  An excerpt:  Back then some of us thought that he was the same as most USA negros, but he is NOT, and he has become a total insult to our great successful negros in the USA.  Personally, I find that extremely offensive and I’m writing a letter in response.  I encourage each of you to do the same.

This was followed by a later email and blog post reiterating his request to take "Mr. Stephenson to task." And so they did, including none other than NH Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. But first out of the gate was another local lib (known to ‘Grok readers, perhaps) who fancies himself intellectually superior  to most folks, once again seeking first to dazzle readers with his "vast knowledge" of matters of great importance, in the hopes they’ll believe his recollection of history and culture. This week, he gave us HIS version of history– "Negro 101", if you will:

Does the washroom sign say “All employees must wash feet before returning to prayer?” You know– by the footbasin…

.tyson.labor.caliphate

The story about Tyson Foods’ decision to swap the Labor Day holiday for Eid al-Fitr is sweeping the Internet and flying all around via email as we speak. From the Shelbyville Times-Gazette:

Workers at Tyson Foods’ poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no longer have a paid day off on Labor Day, but will instead take the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr in the fall.

A recent press release from the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) stated that a new contract at the Shelbyville facility "implements a new holiday to accommodate the … Muslim workers at the plant."

I have some thoughts on this. First, while I’m definitely NOT the biggest fan of labor unions, what is more American than the concept of a three-day weekend at the end of summer? If this isn’t evidence of non-assimilation, I don’t know what is. While I don’t necessarily dispute the workers’ right to decide when their allotted holidays will be taken, I just believe it tells us something about some of the more recent immigrants to our country– especially when compared against those who came before, eagerly seeking to become "American" which included adopting its traditions and customs (not to mention the language). Although I suppose the ranks of Islamic employees could include a growing number of "disaffected" African-Americans too, as it is no secret that this demographic is a growth market for new converts. The Times-Gazette story continues:

there are approximatly 700 Muslims working at Tyson, but Mickelson said that Somalis only represent approximately 250 of the 1,200 employed at the plant, a little over 20 percent of the workforce.

"All Team Members who have completed their probationary period are eligible for all eight paid holidays including Eid al-Fitr," the Tyson spokeman said.

The union also claimed that in addition to the observance of the Muslim holiday, "two prayer rooms have been created to allow Muslim workers to pray twice a day and return to work without leaving the plant."

Mickelson said that Shelbyville’s Tyson plant "does have a prayer room to accommodate the needs of Muslim Team Members."

"In addition to regular, non-paid breaks, all Team Members are allotted a seven-minute paid break," the Tyson spokesman said. "Some Team Members choose to pray during this time."

While I’m not against the concept of people praying during work breaks, this is much more ingrained into the workplace culture– by written rule– than anything I’ve seen anywhere with regards to other religions one has long found here in America. This is the difference between a more passive, personal religious relationship with God than that of Islam, which seeks to insert itself into EVERY facet of life, including the leading authorities– in this case, the union and operation of a major corporation. And of course we all know that this includes politics and the government itself. (Sharia law)

Guest Post: “[A] depraved, clerical system of government”

Iran Hostages

Islamic Terror Breeds in Iran

by Amil Imani

The Islamic Republic terror machine once again has taken off at the speed of light in Iran and exemplifies a depraved, clerical system of government, which legitimizes its depravity through terror, fear and intimidation of Iranian people. With the additional handpicking of the newly selected members of the Islamic "Majles," the clergy have intensified their terror against the people of Iran and their insatiable appetite for another holocaust against the Jewish State, at all cost. The leaders of the Islamic Republic have gone completely mad.

The Islamic Republic has stationed revolutionary and militia troops to actively and deliberately prevent anyone from any demonstrations or objections against the totalitarian regime. They are planning to silence people by any means available to them.

Parents who inquire at police headquarters about their arrested sons and daughters could be taken away or simply disappear. Students are tortured and, on many occasions, murdered for crimes they never committed. And yet, we see many western governments are engaging and heavily investing in the Islamic Republic where its survival depends upon shedding the blood of innocent Iranians.

The members of the Guardian Council determine the goals of the state and the means of achieving them in almost complete isolation from the people. They believe that the interests of the individual are to be sacrificed to those of the clergies and the Islamic agendas, which are in contrast with the needs and the goals of 90 percent of the Iranian population.

During the previous presidential "election," only a small percentage of the voters bothered to vote, since voting under the pre-screening system of the mullahs is more like selection than election. The result of staying away from the polls materialized in the person of the intransigent, Islamofascist Ahmadinejad and his abiding Islamic death-based beliefs.

Suit filed in Illinois seeking disbarment of Barack Obama. Heh! Looks like Billy Shaheen is Hillary’s “gift” to the Obama Campaign that just keeps on giving!

...mud

pig in slop..Bill Shaheen..Shaheen muddy boots

Regular readers know that the name of Billy Shaheen (husband of former Gov. Jeanne) is no stranger to these pages. It’s pretty much a given that when something slimy is spawned from deep within the bowels of the New Hampshire Democratic Party (NHDP), Billy’s fingerprints are apt to be all over. As a conservative that mostly finds common cause with Republicans, I’ve always watched with great glee whenever the Democrats wind up at each others throats. That was indeed the case back during the heat of the (at the time) still contested Democrat primary when the Obama and Clinton camps were engaged in a pitched battle for supremacy– when Billy, on behalf of Hillary, made his move. As linked to in this prior ‘Grok posting, the Washington Post told the story, noting Shaheen

expressed his personal misgivings about whether Obama or Edwards would be electable if they became the party’s nominee.

Among his concerns about Obama as the nominee, he said in an interview here today, is that his background is so relatively unknown and that the Republicans would do their best to unearth negative aspects of it, or concoct mistruths about it. Shaheen, a lawyer and influential state power broker, mentioned as an example Obama’s use of cocaine and marijuana as a young man, which Obama has been open about in his memoir and on the trail.

"The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight … and one of the things they’re certainly going to jump on is his drug use," said Shaheen, the husband of former N.H. governor Jeanne Shaheen, who is planning to run for the Senate next year. Billy Shaheen contrasted Obama’s openness about his past drug use — which Obama mentioned again at a recent campaign appearance in New Hampshire — with the approach taken by George W. Bush in 1999 and 2000, when he ruled out questions about his behavior when he was "young and irresponsible."

Shaheen said Obama’s candor on the subject would "open the door" to further questions. "It’ll be, ‘When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?’" Shaheen said. "There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It’s hard to overcome."

Sometimes dirty tricks are hard to overcome. And, some end up having unintended (or maybe not?) consequences…

As reported by Jim Geraghty at NRO’s Campaign Spot:

Some anonymous figure has filed a complaint with the Illinois Bar Association, charging Obama with:
