President Trump’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2021 does something we should support. The proposed budget would reduce the size and reach of the federal bureaucracy. That is a good thing. It is a step in the right direction. As important is the way he has chosen to do this too is significant.

Focus on Growth, Opportunity and Innovation is Paying Off for New Hampshire
The takeaway message from Gov. Chris Sununu’s State of the State address on Thursday was that New Hampshire, like comedian Larry The Cable Guy, gets her done.
Follow the Money
I have been working on both State and County Budgets for over two decades. One handy rule I use in analyzing why the money is in the budget is “Follow the Money.” This simple rule leads one to find out the why this got included. Who benefits? Where does the money come from?
Constitutional Convention: Yea or Nay?
In 2012 New Hampshire’s legislature passed a Concurrent Resolution requesting an Article V Constitutional Convention of States, one of the two ways to amend the Constitution. ‘We’ did this, requesting a Balanced Budget Amendment to the US Constitution, in 1979 also, and a handful of times before that for other various reasons. On Wednesday, the … Read more
Tales from the BudComm – The “two bites at the apple” edition
Last night, again, was the public hearing for the Town and School District; my previous post covered the discussion of getting the Budget Committee to endorse siphoning off peoples’ tax monies to “charities” that live off government tax monies (else they’d go belly up). This was is about the School Board trying to have their … Read more
Tales from the BudComm – the (Last-1) post
Last night was the Public Hearing for both the Town and the School District; about 100 people showed up with the majority of them being employees of both + elected officials from both. Thus, other than a few self-interested members of the public, most were self-interested from a special interest group perspective. Pretty much everything … Read more
Gov. Sununu tells the NH House and Senate what his fiscal positions are for 2020 and 2021
This letter was sent to us by a loyal reader and NH State Representative. It outlines some red lines that Soucy and Shurtleff should not cross. Emphasis is mine.
Notable Quote – James Buchanan and Roger Congleton
It is evident that a constraint or limit on the taxing power or authority of government means little unless this constraint is also accompanied by constraints on the spending power. If a government can implement direct transfers in a discriminatory manner, then members of any ruling coalition can capture for themselves any desired share of … Read more
Tales from the Budcomm – the last season
Yep, after three three-year terms, this is the last budget season for me based on a promise I made to TMEW. New members are on-board, sub-committees member assignments are done and the scramble to set appointments with the department heads is already in gear. By the middle of January, each budget for each municipality and … Read more
The UN Will Run Out of Money at the End of October
What if the United States didn’t have to leave the UN or kick it out. What if it just decided not to keep bailing out an organization that works against it 24/7/365? And the UN ran out of money. Well, it’s happening.
And this is a problem……why? “United Nations could run out of money in a few weeks”
Competent managers? Expert technocrats, capable of solving the world’s every problem? Sure – except their own: The United Nations is running a deficit of $230 million, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday, and may run out of money by the end of October. In a letter intended for the 37,000 employees at the UN … Read more
Budget Compromise Proves NH Democrats Want Economy To Tank so they Can Raise Taxes
The comprises budget signed by Gov. Sununu sucks. It spends more, and it’s got Easter eggs, more suitably named poison pills. But it’s not a total loss. It proves that New Hampshire Democrats were lying about tax hikes.
New Hampshire Used the State Budget to Raise the Smoking Age to 19
I’m not a fan of legislative leaders hiding unrelated legislation in a budget. It’s a trick. Budgets will get passed eventually. Stuffing changes that failed to pass in the House or Senate needs to stop. So, how about one that was never a bill at all?
Cornerstone on Budget Deal: Good News and Bad News For Abortion Funding
New Hampshire’s compromise budget contains good news and bad news for those defending the right to life and conscience rights. Cornerstone applauds the decision to block direct funding of abortion, and at the same time denounces the increase in funding to abortion providers masked as “family planning dollars.” Here’s the good news. Pro-life senators and … Read more
Greg Moore – NH Budget: The Good, the Bad, (And I’ll add some Ugly)
State Rep. Judy Aron gave us a nice 30,000-foot view of the budget here. But we’ve only just begun to dissect this. Budgets are no longer just exercises of force that redistribute your money. They are vehicles for law-making without public input and that can’t go unreported.
So kids, what did we learn from Wednesday’s House Session (09/25/19)?
We learned that The Rolling Stones were correct when they sang, “You can’t always get what you want”. The Budget bills HB3 and HB4 had at least one Democrat legislator literally in tears!
Now That It Passed, You Can See What’s In It: HB3 and HB4, Full Text
Going to read through this later and provide some opinion, but until then – here is the full text of HB3, and HB4 – the “Compromise Budget Bills” that were approved today (overwhelmingly.)
New Hampshire Legislature Overwhelmingly Approves Budget ‘Compromise’
Both houses of the New Hampshire legislature have approved what was sold as a compromise budget deal. The media spin is that we now have a budget. But we always had one. It was last years.
Democrats Claiming Budget “Compromise” Funds Abortion-Advocacy by Planned Parenthood
This: Earlier this year, Planned Parenthood announced it would no longer accept funding from the federal Title X program because of a new Trump rule that restricts recipients of Title X from giving abortion referrals. New Hampshire Democrats included replacement funding for the loss of federal funds in their budget. If the above tweet is … Read more
