SALT in Speaker’s Wounds: Budget Bill Threatened by NY Republicans

House Speaker Mike Johnson is being pressured on multiple fronts in his efforts to pass a budget reconciliation bill by Independence Day.  Not only is he being pressed by fiscal hawks to make deep spending cuts to cover tax breaks, but he’s also being threatened by blue-state Republicans demanding higher tax deductions to offset their states’ high-tax policies. … Read more

Tax Cuts Or Else!?

This week, my guest is Phil Kerpen, the President of American Commitment. The topic is taxes, tax reform, and securing the 2017 Trump tax cuts before they expire. We also talk about messaging on both sides, a potential Republican cave to an age-old and dishonest Democrat narrative, and the economic consequences for everyday Americans if … Read more

Trump Cut Taxes for Billionaires?

It was astonishing to hear that, after neglecting the Ship of State for a solid week for debate “training,” Joe Biden failed at both execution and plan. The plan included repeating his stock lies, including:

Millennials, Commonsense and Tax Policy

In theory, lower tax rates should be supported by most Americans. A “tax cut” means less money going to Uncle Sam. More importantly, it means more money staying in your pocket. Democrat congresswoman Kuster’s press release on why she opposed the reforms is typical.

“I support real tax reform that starts with middle-class families and small businesses,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “Unfortunately, the plan forced through Congress by Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell is a missed opportunity that overwhelmingly benefits corporate special interests at the expense of the majority of Americans. The fact that provisions for the middle class expire while those for corporate special interests are permanent makes clear Congressional Republicans’ priorities.”

But aren’t Democrats the only reason tax cuts for the middle-class had to expire.

A good friend of the Grok recently shared my post on how Tax reform is not just about money; it is about trust. He posted it as a status update on the Closed Group ‘Brookline NH Elections’ on Facebook. He got this response.

Keith F. Thompson: “The tax cut for ordinary Americans is temporary, while the tax cuts for corporations and the very wealthy are permanent. “Average” Americans have already seen their tax cuts disappear like vapor. Inflation, cuts in services, a MASSIVE increase in the deficit, and now, chaos from this maniacal trade war. My tax cut was smaller, and didn’t survive the rise in gas prices.”

Here’s what I offered in response.
