The Senate on Wednesday quickly approved legislation that would remove the word “lunatic” everywhere it appears in the federal code.

The Senate approved S. 2367 by unanimous consent, giving the House a chance to act if it wishes, although no House member has introduced a similar bill.

…The word “lunatic” appears in the U.S. Code in Title 1, Chapter 1, which covers rules of construction. Chapter 1 holds that when determining the meaning of any law, “the words ‘insane’ and ‘insane person’ and ‘lunatic’ shall include every idiot, lunatic, insane person, and person non compos mentis.”

Congressional Stalemate is better than Financial Disaster

Is Congress at a stand-still?  If so, is that good or bad?

Americans elect representatives whose views, they believe, are best for our country and our people.  Since Americans disagree about these things, there will be disagreements, conflicts and even stalemates in Congress.

Our nation’s founders wanted to ensure that extreme legislation, violating their principles, customs, and beliefs, is not imposed on the American people.  So, the founders created a system which typically forces compromise to ensure that legislation is acceptable to most Americans.

They scream out and writhe, swear, insult, spew hatred, and do everything in their power to intimidate you before you can get to the end. They started screaming days ago, actually.

It’s A Knock Out!

OK.  It’s not threatening vehicular manslaughter, but I can see the progressives filling their diapers in rage on this one. They do so love Nancy.  Thankfully this is the work of Jay Leno so if anyone is sewn so tight that they are actually offended by it, call him to complain.  

Day 50

As the sun rises over New England on December 22nd, 2010, we will have begun the fiftieth day since the November 2nd Election. As it comes to a close, fifty full days will have passed. Fifty sunrises and sunsets. Fifty breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. And by some estimates, as many as 250 billion phone calls will have been made in that time period, and not one of them (to the best of my knowledge) was from Carol Shea-Porter to congratulate Frank Guinta on his victory over her in the the NH first congressional district race.

Just Throwing This Out There…

The House Democrats have balked at a bi-partisan deal that while not perfect, is an actual compromise, and would end a good deal of the uncertainty about tax increases (that is stagnating the economy) by ensuring that for the most part, there are almost none. (The estate tax survives)

Inside Baseball

Does anyone know the process for congressional chairmanships? Erik has indicated above that the House GOP needs to ratify leadership’s decisions but I was not aware of that condition. It was my understanding that anyone who is not on the steering committee did not get a voice on chairmanships and appointments but maybe that’s wrong.

DREAM a Little DREAM

Ed Morrissey over at Hot Air shares with us Senator Jeff Sessions revelation that despite the events of early November, Mr. Reid has submitted his badly written DREAM act aka-amnesty bill, on four seperate occassions in recent months. Ed brings the point home so well I’ll not even try to do better. (As if I even could)

Senator Mitch McConnell (R- KY) is said to be working to undermine an effort at banning earmarks in the US Senate.  This is not surprising.  Senators, as a rule, abuse the privilege more.  And while appropriations of this nature amount to a fraction of the total budget, it is an impressive fraction that rarely serves the interests of anyone more than the Seantor themselves.

Was it Carol Shea-Porter, 2012 congressional candidate in waiting who said that earmarks are necessary so that the state can get back it’s fair share of the federal taxes it’s residents pay?  Or was that Hodes?  Does it matter? Sure, congressman abuse them as well, even those who swear they have sworn them off.
