Let’s see I have this straight – Injection needles for drugs good, plastic straws for toddlers and young children bad?

Yeah, I think I have that down pat.  All over the nation in the bigger cities I read of “needle exchange programs” for people using illicit drugs who then drop them all over the place, including where young children play in parks and playground and schoolyards.  There’s even talk of setting up “shoot up rooms” so that illegal drug users can shoot up “in safety” – all the Progressives are perfectly fine with this. You know, “helping” those that are doing criminal acts so as to do more of it.  Hey, “No Stigma!” is all the rage.  It’s like taxes in reverse – tax that what you want less of while removing yet another brick in the Wall That Is Society; it’s just flashing yet another green light for yet more bad behavior. Add in condemnation for us that rightfully call out these accessories to illegal behavior for being wrong and you certainly get more of it.

But use a plastic bendy straw with which to suck on a cool libation…oooh, that’s BAD! You Polluter you, you hate the Earth, you hate turtles who get stuck with straws up their noses

Whenever anything bad happens that involves a gun, we can safely predict that two other things are going to happen shortly thereafter. The first is that some kind of gun control laws will be proposed.  The second is that these proposals will be met with claims that ‘gun control laws don’t work’.

The special session on Internet sales tax: “Why should NH grow its government without clear reason?”

You deserve an explanation of what happened in the legislature this week. What has been in the papers is a lot of political posturing. Let me help you filter the noise from the message.

The Governor requested and the Executive Council authorized a special session of the NH legislature in order respond to the Supreme Court decision in the South Dakota vs. Wayfair case. At issue was the Supreme Court’s change of the physical presence test it had imposed in the Quill decision with respect to the commerce clause. The court in Wayfair removed the physical presence requirement of a business established in Quill in order for a state to require collection of “remote tax”.  In its place, it left an “economic nexus” standard. Nobody yet understands what exactly that means. The test was changed and the case was remanded to South Dakota where it has not yet been taken up.

The governor made the special session request of the executive council June 28th and the council by a 4-1 split vote authorized a special session. In the interim, a joint House-Senate task force made up of 7 Senators and 10 House members convened to put together language which has been improperly represented as a bill. The joint task force work could not be enrolled as a bill because the legislature was not in session and no rules were in place for dealing with the measure.

Yet, in effect, they make the political calculus that in the long run, it won’t hurt them and rely on that hackneyed phrase to get them through:

Despite “Hands Free Law” Passage NH Highway Deaths Remain High

In 2015 New Hampshire imposed a hands-free ban, which prohibits the handling of portable electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle (with a few exceptions). Since Democrat Gov. Maggie Hassan signed it every year in July we remind everyone that the legislation was a legisaltive photo-op. A “see we’re doing something measure” with no basis in fact and would provide no real-world results.

What I didn’t predict was that it might make matters worse.

Extend worker freedom to all of New Hampshire

AFTER THE landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision on worker freedom, Janus v. AFSCME, New Hampshire now has the opportunity to become the first state in the Northeast to pass right-to-work legislation and expand freedom for thousands of workers.

The court found that because collective bargaining with the government affects public policy issues like pension liabilities, taxes, spending and more, it equates to lobbying and thus political speech. Public employees are now protected from having their hard-earned money automatically deducted from their paycheck and directed toward political speech they may disagree with.
