Response to Nancy Parsons Questions about Objections to Obama’s Gun Control Policies

Perhaps other people wonder about the questions in Nancy Parson’s letter of January 18, 2013 in the Laconia Daily Sun.  (See:  http://issuu.com/dailysun/docs/lds1-18-13 ) My beliefs are based on the following: True safety requires consideration of reality not wishes. If anyone is hurt during a crime, it should be the criminal not the intended victim.  Criminals will ignore gun laws and get the guns they want.  Lack of accurate information causes many people to irrationally fear guns in the hands of law abiding Americans.

First.  I lived most of my life outside of New Hampshire in states with very restrictive gun laws so initially it felt strange to see armed civilians.  All those other states have much higher crime rates than New Hampshire, and I feel much safer in New Hampshire where criminals aren’t assured of helpless victims.

Second.  A common question among people who know nothing about guns is about “how many bullets does one need?”  The answer is, it depends.

Anyone who thinks you only need one or two bullets should go to a shooting range (there is one in Belmont) and shoot at a target (they’ll help you).  Then consider how hard it is to hit a flying bird or a running, jumping and turning animal.

Self-defense is another matter.  To an unpredictably moving target, add in surprise, fear, perhaps terror, attempts to corral and calm children, calling the police for help, perhaps an angry attacker shooting at you, and our natural hesitancy to shoot another human.

Politicians like Obama help Murderers at Schools like Newtown

Why are killers at public schools like Newtown able to kill so many people?  They didn’t use military grade assault or automatic weapons.  Few or none used large capacity magazines.  They killed so many people because they had lots of time to shoot lots of bullets.

They had so much time because politicians made schools “gun free zones.”  And, when every second could mean another dead child, the police are minutes away.

Theoretically, politicians created “gun free zones” to protect children.  But, actually they created “helpless victim zones” allowing killers to easily get their 15 minutes of fame, revenge, or company as they commit suicide.

Criminals have set out intending to kill lots of people in many different places.  But, except for one case, killers have only succeeded in killing more than three people in public mass killings in “gun free zones” where law abiding people cannot have guns that could stop killers.

Political Elites say, “Protect us and our families”, but Not the “Common Folk”

What do American Presidents and Vice-Presidents, their wives and children, foreign Heads of State, many Governors, big city Mayors, large Company CEOs, prominent directors, actors, singers, and other entertainers, and the children of many wealthy people in Washington, DC, and other wealthy “elites” have in common?

They carry guns or have armed guards to keep them from becoming victims of criminals, even when they are in countries, states and cities with some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world.

Almost all these elites who are also Democrats have something else in common; they don’t want you to have a gun with which to defend yourself, your family, or other law abiding Americans.

Thank Obama and Democrats for Tax Increases

Democrats have told so many lies about taxes and the fiscal cliff that they apparently felt compelled to extend, but not further reduce, the Bush tax cuts on incomes below $400,000.

After ten years of claiming that the Bush tax cuts were only for the rich (a lie), that they caused the deficit crisis (a lie), and that the Clinton tax rates were wonderful (fiction), why didn’t President Obama and other Democrats just let the Bust tax cuts expire and revert to the Clinton era tax rates?

Disappointing Ayotte Vote

The following is the letter I sent to Senator Ayotte after hearing of her vote today on the Democrat proposal to amend the Bush Tax cuts, H.R. 8. Dear Senator Ayotte, I am disappointed by your vote today to extend only part of the Bush tax cuts.  Democrats and the media will claim that Senate Republicans … Read more

Obama-Boehner is nothing like Reagan-O’Neill

The column in the 12/21/2012 Citizen of Laconia (www.citizen.com) titled, “History teaches us valuable lesson about taking the same side”, apparently written by Steve and Cokie Roberts, is interesting, but I see little similarity between the Reagan-O’Neill situation and the Obama-Boehner situation.  For example, Tip O’Neill was interested in following the law and passing a budget.  President Obama’s last two (and perhaps 3) budgets were so unrealistic that they have received NO democrat votes in either the House or the Senate.  The Republican controlled House has passed annual budgets, but the Democrat controlled Senate refuses to consider them or pass their own budget, and President Obama is, apparently, fine with that.  Having no budget creates a crisis every time that funding is about to run out in any area.

Do Something that Actually Dissuades and Stops Killers

I am sympathetic with Ben Fordham’s call, in his 12/19 letter to the editor of The Citizen of Laconia (www.citizen.com), to “DO something“. We should do something that works. What we have been doing fails because it has been based on fantasy, not realism.

We have established “gun free zones” to protect children and others, but “gun free zones” only protect the killers and serve up unprotected victims.

Fordham apparently wonders why people want guns for protection since we have so much law enforcement, police, FBI, etc. If law enforcement is the answer, then why are there so many dead in Newtown? Newtown is evidence of the truth of the NRA claim, “when seconds count, the police are minutes away.”

Liberals Lie about Guns … and frankly just about everything else

We can always count on James Veverka (on 12/19/2012 in the Laconia Daily Sun, laconiadailysun.com) to respond irrationally (hopefully he doesn’t have a gun), and suppress some, and misstate other, facts.

First. No “rightwinger”, no second amendment supporter believes there should be no controls on access to guns. But, they do believe criminals who use guns should be severely punished. Veverka’s claims to the contrary are lies.

Second. Contrary to depictions on liberal TV shows and movies, no gun owner I have ever met or know of “deifies” his or anyone else’s gun (perhaps just Veverka and his friends do that). NRA members recognize guns for what they are, tools that can be used for good or evil, tools that must be respected and carefully handled.

“Gun Free Zone” is a Misnomer

A researcher on the radio indicates that since 1950 each instance of public mass killings, except for one, where more than 3 people were killed has been in a “gun free zone”.

It would be more appropriate to call a “gun free zone” something else, maybe: “easy victim zone”, “easy kill zone”, “easy way to fame zone”, “shoot ducks in a barrel zone”, or “they can’t fight back zone”.

Some Anti-Gun Hypocrites

Leading Democrat Senators want to limit your access to guns.  They already have their permits, but they think that you can’t be trusted with a gun.  Senator Feinstein is going to re-introduce the assault weapons ban even though it did nothing to reduce murders when it was in place before nor was there any increase in murders when it … Read more

Liberal Policies and Culture Increased Newtown Death Toll

What horrible events occurred today! The parents and Newtown Connecticut community must be wondering if they can endure the pain. Obviously our hearts go out to the families and community.

Already leftists are crying for more gun control. A rational person would look at the number of murders in Washington, DC or New York City or Chicago with their strict anti-gun laws and wonder why anyone thinks more gun control would have helped. It is amazing that almost all mass murders happen in “gun free zones”. Apparently murders don’t care about breaking into the gun free zones, who could have imagined that?

There are two nearly universal laws regarding guns. First, when danger strikes and seconds count, the police are minutes away. Second, criminals will always be able to get guns. The only real question is whether innocent people might be armed and able to defend themselves? Studies show that when the answer is no, there will be more crime and more deaths, and when the answer is yes, there is less crime and fewer deaths.

Ignoring Threats Invites Aggression and Raises the Death Toll

Without warning, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor seventy-one years ago.  Because of this sneak attack, President Roosevelt said that December 7, 1941 would be remembered as a “day of infamy”.

December 7th revealed our naivety and our lack of preparedness that unnecessarily caused many tens of thousands of American war deaths.  Despite years of war in Europe and Asia, our country’s leaders refused to accept the fact that war was imminent and failed to counter the modern weapons, tactics, and skills that would be used to kill Americans.

Failing to face reality, the United States entered WWII surprised and unprepared, just like we entered WWI, Korea, and the war on terror.  People died unnecessarily because we extended “peace dividends” too long.

Where is Obama’s Help for Sandy Victims?

President Obama flew to New Jersey for a photo op and to make lots of promises before flying on to campaign events.  Apparently he has forgotten about Sandy and the hurting Americans. A week later, hundreds of thousands of people in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut are without power, without running water, without food, … Read more

What I have been hearing about Voter Fraud

The Democrats tell us voter fraud doesn’t exist…except when they lose an election.  Early voting for the 2012 election has begun and reports are already flowing in about voter fraud.  It’s amazing that all reports to date are giving votes to Democrats, in particular President Obama.

Below are some voter fraud techniques:

Voter Machine tampering.  Voting machines have been reported to be malfunctioning.  People in North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio and either Kansas or Iowa (I can’t remember which, possibly both) have reported that when they push the button for Mitt Romney, the machine selects Barack Obama.  So far, no reports of Obama votes being changed to Romney votes … you would think if this was a random problem, some Obama votes would go to Romney but no reports so far.  One wonders how many Romney votes have been converted to Obama votes before the machine “failure” was noticed.  Hopefully early voting will have found and corrected all these mistakes or tampering… but I wouldn’t bet on it.  If you are using a voting machine, check carefully before finally submitting your ballot.

Re-Elect Jeanie Forrester

Despite years of Democrat condemnation of rich bankers, Senatorial candidate Bob Lamb shows that rich bankers can even be applauded if they parrot Democrat talking points, promote the special interest groups that fund Democrats, and help the Democrat Party extend its control over the lives of the American people.

Describing lawsuits against him and other executives, Lamb says, “these lawsuits never went to trial, and no factual determination was ever made that the allegations were true.” This strange wording proves nothing.  Similar wording, e.g., “no criminal court ever determined that I killed Nicole and Ron” allows OJ to claim innocence.

Lamb seems like a nice guy but he repeats the old Democrat complaints and promises.  Did Democrats improve your life when they controlled the NH Legislature (2007-2010)? E.g., did they fix all the roads and bridges?  No.  But, they raised our cost of living and hurt NH employers with 99 new or increased taxes and fees.

Who cares about a child’s education? Conservatives!

Liberals (typically Democrats) and Conservatives (typically Republicans) have very different viewpoints about education.  Liberals see the public school educational establishment (the unions, the government bureaucracies, the University Education Departments, etc.) as the way to educate children (except occasionally for their own children).

Conservatives believe results are the important thing, “Is the child getting a good education?”  Government ads claim that every day 7000 children drop out of school and millions more graduate lacking basic knowledge.  The educational establishment isn’t meeting society’s need to prepare children for adulthood.

VP Biden shows Obama’s Disregard for our Country

One wonders how much the American people must suffer or how great a disaster must happen to our country before Vice-President Biden will discuss these topics seriously.  In Thursday’s debate Vice President Biden acted more like a candidate for class clown than a man concerned about his country.

One wonders, if 23 million Americans who can’t find the work they need to care for their families aren’t enough to get Vice-President Biden’s attention, how many have to suffer?  50,000,000?  75,000,000?

If nearly 50,000,000 people in poverty is not enough for Vice-President Biden to discuss real solutions, how many poor must there be?  75,000,000?  100,000,000?

Attempt to Cover up Naive, Dangerous, Failed Obama Policies

For weeks President Obama and his top aides lied to us, claiming the events in the Middle East on 9-11 were caused by a movie that few people even knew about.   Those claims were attempts to cover up President Obama’s failed Middle East policies that strengthen terrorists, comfort our enemies, and are bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war.

For years Democrats told us that killing Osama would destroy al-Qaeda and win the war on terror.  The 9-11 attacks exposed that obvious falsehood.

President Obama refused requests for assistance for the real democracy revolution in Iran that would have helped stabilize the Middle East and end Iran’s aid to enemies that kill American soldiers.

Obama couldn’t avoid his record … or What went down Chris Mathews’s leg?

That wasn’t a tingle going down Chris Matthews’s leg during the Presidential debate. Apparently four years of media worship, avoiding meaningful questions, and reliance on teleprompters are not great debate preparation. Consequently, the Obama campaign failed to set expectations low enough for President Obama.

President Obama must have expected to be able to keep the debate about his (four year old) promises for the future and debunked lies about Romney’s plans. He failed; he couldn’t keep the debate away from his own failed record.

Democrat Education Plans Repeat Previous Failures

The debates between Maggie Hassan, Democrat, and Ovide Lamontaigne, Republican, remind me that the success of our children is at stake in this election.  Democrat allegiance to Unions and the Educational Establishment lock children into failing public schools.

Today’s Democrat solution to educational problems has been providing increasingly poorer results for decades, just spend more money. That fits Einstein’s definition of insanity, “doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.”  More money is not the solution, it just raises the cost of poor results.
