The Union Leader ran an article today about two felons who have apparently been doing random violent home invasions where the occupants are always beaten and sometimes raped and/or killed. So what is a Democrat’s solution in the comment section after the article? “This is what happens when your state government underfunds prisons….” Sheesh. I responded as follows:
Union Leader
NH GOP RINO’s, State Representative Stella Tremblay, and the Destructive Democrats….
High-level NH RINO’s (“Republicans In Name Only”) are at it again: Jennifer Horn, Gene Chandler, Steve Duprey, and Fergus Cullen are all in a tizzy over state Rep. Stella Tremblay’s recent thoughts on whether the Boston bombing might have elements of an “inside job.” In the Union Leader today, Cullen called Rep. Tremblay “delusional.” Well, whatever error in judgment she may be making, it is less egregious than “Republican leaders” who go out of their way to publicly attack a sitting Republican member of the State House. Here’s what I said today in response to a Union Leader article about it:
Some thoughts on the Pindell / Cline / Douglas criticisms of the Honor Your Oath Rally – Part 1
I’m not even sure that James Pindell, Chuck Douglas, and Drew Cline were even at the same rally I was from reading their criticism (one at the WMUR site, two Union Leader Op-Eds) – or even bothered to watched the videos that were up at several sites. Each of them decided to tear the folks apart that stood up for their beliefs without seeing what was, to me, the obvious. In fact, I’m not even sure they even saw the obvious reason why 600 folks turned out to participate, volunteers doing the grunt work necessary to put on such an event, and the dozen or so speakers up at the podium. Yes, when you put yourself out in public, this is what happens – others will take pot shots at you, at the rally, or the issue for a variety of reasons: their sense of “professionalism”, their overarching specialized knowledge has been “violated”, their standing within their own specialized communities “demands” they take a stand, or they decided to reject the perceived issue out of hand as “being without merit”. None of them seem to have caught the intense sense of importance of the actual subject to the speakers and the attendees.
Or, to put it simply, wielding a hatchet just because they have an audience to impress or a thinly veiled purpose that may be getting set for the future. Or both.
Honor Your Oath. It wasn’t about journalists worried about column inches, punctuation, and delicately chosen words and sentence structure; it is about keeping a promise. It wasn’t about case law, or legal briefs, or court battles (even if from a former Supreme Court Justice); it is about a man and the importance of his word. It was not about bright lights, teleprompters, self-absorption, politics, or even the crowd; it is about judging a man and his bond. It wasn’t about guns or self-defense or “Stand Your Ground” (although that’s all these three seemingly heard), it wasn’t about Right or Left; it is about answering the question “Do we trust this person when their actions do not match that Oath”?
This is so wasteful and stupid: Using police resources to benefit taxi cab companies.
The Manchester police dept. proudly announced a “sting operation” conducted last Friday to “nab 5 criminals.” The crimes? A few people gave rides to other people and got a few bucks in return. You can read the entire crime-busting story in the Union Leader HERE. Wow.
Why is this waste of thousands of dollars of police time allowed? Really only to benefit the two companies holding the government-created taxi monopoly. These are nothing more than economic scams, set up to benefit one or two favored companies while harming the public and denying the right to individual choice. In my response posted to the article, I explain why. Here’s what I said:
Gun Clubs and Membership Caps
When we get to wishing a great deal for ourselves, whatever we get soon turns into mere limitation and exclusion. —George Eliot
Yesterday, the Union Leader’s Paul Feely featured a story entitled, Busy gun clubs may have to cap membership. Scott Jenkins, President of the Chester Rod and Gun club had this to say…
It’s one thing to want to grow as fast as you can and not refuse people, but it’s another thing to show up on a Saturday and be turned away because there’s too many people here or there’s a three-hour wait.”
Fool Me Once, Shame on You, Fool Me One Hundred Times….Call Me A Republican Senator
The Sunday Union Leader has a staff editorial in which it comes to the defense of Senator Ayotte accepting and attending an invite to dinner with Mr. Obama and a number of other ‘Ranking’ (see also Rank) GOP Senators.
To suggest that there is no value in conveying that message to the President in person, in a casual setting in which a working relationship might develop, is to misunderstand the way politics works.
Last August, Sen. Tom Coburn (who attended last Wednesday’s dinner) came to the defense of the Tea Party during an interview on MSNBC. Among his points was that Tea Party activists “understand that you’ve got to have human relations to get along in this world.” It is amazing and disappointing that so many activists on both sides think that progress is made by refusing to work with anyone in the other camp.
This is the way politics works, except in the case of Mr. Obama’s politics, this only works for him.
“Free Staters told to set clock for 2015”
There’s a fascinating story in today’s Union Leader about the Liberty Forum just put on by the Free State Project in Nashua this weekend. It seems that the current President of the Free State Project, Carla Gierke, fully expects that New Hampshire will be welcoming 20,000 liberty activists by 2018 at the latest. (Come and join … Read more
Some Anti-Gun Arguments Are So Lame…
There’s a great “Your Turn” editorial in the Union Leader, written by Brandon Harvey of Danbury. His primary point is that some of the arguments being made in favor of restricting second amendment rights are so lame (as in unable to stand on their own), they have to be addressed, and he does a fine job doing just that.
Another argument in relation to this bizarre position taken by the anti-gun crowd is this: You don’t need an “assault weapon” or “high capacity magazine” to hunt deer. First, the Second Amendment says “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” It does not say “the right to hunt deer.” In fact, deer hunting is not a right. The use of the word “militia” obviously implies using weapons that would be useful in combat.
Militia, combat, I guess we are entitled to military style weapons after all, whose keeping the government…shall not infringe. oh! Wait. Brandon’s not done…
The Union Leader on Democrat Rep. Cynthia Chase: “Dictatorial impulses.”
They can say that again. Democrat Rep Cynthia Chase told us recently that the “Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today.” Her solution? Pass laws…
Not Exactly William Loeb III’s N.H. Union Leader Anymore
“I would rather have a competent extremist than an incompetent moderate.” —Leon Jaworski
In life change is inevitable. Sometimes change is good. Other times, change is not so good. Then there are times where change is merely a change that we might individually do not care much for.
The New Hampshire Union Leader, once a reliably conservative publication established in 1863 out of the Frank Knox moderation strain, (moving decidedly right under the leadership of William Loeb III and Bernard J. McQuaid) is now part of a “new media era” sometimes showing
This is what the prejudice and bigotry of a Democrat State Rep. can lead to:
A possible threat to incite violence against an unfavored minority. Here’s the story: Democrat State Rep. Cynthia Chase of Keene has recently displayed an alarming attitude of bigotry and prejudice against libertarians and conservatives who make up the Free State Project movement. Her comments have gone viral, and are being reported today in the … Read more
“Those dangerous Freestaters!”
Here’s an interesting little hit-piece from the online Union Leader about “all those dangerous Freestaters!” And how “they’re messing up traditional values!” As is often the case, the comments after the story are more enlightening than the story itself. You can read the whole article and comments HERE.
Talk About Having No Idea What A Conservative Is… (Updated Again & Bumped)
John B. Heroux is reported to be a resident of Bedford, New Hampshire, and a chronic contributor to the Union Leader Editorial page (if Google can be trusted), but he has absolutely no idea what a conservative is. In his recent “Your Turn” contribution to the public discourse (Union Leader) he starts with this:
The first order of business should be to take the party back from the conservatives. Republicans are the minority party, and the party’s success depends on appealing to independent voters and conservative Democrats. The radical Tea Party and the Rush Limbaugh/Ann Coulter faction do not appeal to these voters.
That’s all well and good as opinion–to which he is of course entitled–except that as he proceeds to storm his way down the laundry list of “consevatives” he blames for all that seems to ail him, he fails to name anyone who has actually behaved like a Conservative.
What About Bob?
“The problem with smear campaigns is that too often they work.” —Mark Shields
Robert M. Tarr. Were it not for bad luck, he would have no luck at all. As the Union Leader’s Mark Hayward pointed out in his Union Leader hatchet job on Bob Tarr, he and his wife Pauline came to the Queen City in the late 1990’s, taking up residence at the New Horizons Shelter where they married thereafter.
He worked at a dollar store as a clerk, but was laid off when he was arrested on child molestation charges. Thereafter, his wife passed away and his children were placed in foster care. His only means of income now is a Social Security Disability.
How is the NH Union Leader Like FEMA…?
How is the Union Leader Like FEMA…? Slow to respond and not very satisfying results. (Ok, maybe they are not that bad, just maybe this once.) Five days ago the Union Leader reported that Salem NH House Rep. Marilinda Garcia was against the veto override of HB 1679- the partial birth abortion ban bill. They … Read more
Hide and Go Seek
The editorial in this morning’s Union Leader visits two problems we’ve had in spades around here of late. A public body unwilling to part with public information and School superintendents. What’s worse than a public body denying access to an investigator’s report that was paid for with taxpayer money? Hiring a lawyer to fight the … Read more
So what did Union Leader’s Ted Seifer wish to accomplish with this line?
Filling a vacancy on any Supreme Court–be it the US Supremes or the NH Supremes–is a big deal, so it is no surprise that people are talking and reporting on it (as we have here, here, and here). So did the Union Leader; Ted Seifer interviewed Tim, asking him about the NHLRF‘s position on Gov. John Lynch’s nominee for the NH Supreme Court, Jim Basssett. Having gotten the link from a friend I decided to read the piece and this caught my eye:
Condon, its current chairman, is a Grafton attorney who has been active in the Free State movement.
Factually true, but what does the Free State Project connection have to do with the NH Constitutional basis that forms the basis for the NHLRF activities?
Yawn – Mainstream Media Reporter(s) lazily gets it wrong
Updated and bumped: Well, another loyal reader caught another Union Leader reporter, Paul Feely, making the same lazy mistake (emphasis mine): The video shows what appears to be New Hampshire election officials handing ballots to unidentified men, who videotaped the exchanges with hidden cameras at polls in Manchester and Nashua. Plural: ballots, men. I watched … Read more
God Bless Joe McQuaid and the Union Leader!
Says McQuaid in a Union Leader editorial today: “Banning a personal income tax in New Hampshire by means of a constitutional amendment makes all the sense in the world — unless, of course, you like the idea of such a powerful and corrosive government confiscation of your money. With Democratic gubernatorial candidates once again refusing to … Read more
House Bill 1339: Union Leader Editorial Doesn’t Get It
“As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights.” —James Madison
On Tuesday a Union Leader editorial called House Bill 1339, “preposterous”. In the UL Editorial entitled, “Contract Hunting,” The UL aptly describes why the bill is problematic. HB 1339, sponsored by Representative Paul Mirski, Joe Duarte and Gary Hopper, is an effort to keep access to hunting, fishing and trapping accessible to all, irrespective of economic and social strata.
The Union Leader points out,
