Elderly Drivers: To Test or Not To Test?

Representative Bob Williams wants to discontinue road testing for Elderly Drivers. Is that a wise idea? House Bill 549 eliminates the requirement for a road test currently in place for Granite State drivers over age seventy five. Prime Sponsor of the bill is 84-year-old Representative Bob Williams, a Concord Democrat. Williams calls the present law, … Read more

“…Both parties accept deficit spending leaving painful debt obligations to people who don’t vote, children and future generations. This is immoral…”

To the Editor:

When did Americans decide it is OK to live comfortably at the expense of their children and future generations?  Parents used to work multiple jobs and sacrifice for their children.  Now Americans make future generations sacrifice for us.

Today’s national debt of $13.3 trillion saddles each new child with over $43,000 worth of our national debt and over $400,000 worth of promised, but un-funded future obligations.  Even at today’s low interest rates, interest payments already are one of the biggest federal budget items.  Projected budgets increase the debt by at least $1 trillion annually for the next ten years, increasing the tax burden on future generations and on ourselves.  Some economists believe this much debt could be more disastrous than the current housing / credit crisis.

If these debts were incurred to save our country during a war, that would be one thing.  The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost $1-2 trillion, the rest of our $13.3 trillion debt was spent to make life easier for today’s Americans.

How did this debt accumulate?  Did Americans decide to take advantage of  their children and future generations?  Or, did politicians take advantage of our trust and gullibility?

Shuttle launch as seen by a parachutist

Get This Man A Space

Two weeks later and Rep. Peter Schmidt (D-Strafford 4) still has to park in the No Parking Zone when other spaces are available.  Yes, this is a follow up to my earlier post–Peter " No Parking" Schmidt.  Apparently Peter is a real stand up guy.  Veteran.  Works hard.  Always shows up in Concord.  I appreciate … Read more

My name is Barry. Let me be clear…

Guest post by Ken St. Cyr My name is Barry. Here is my story… Since the Constitution was written 20 centuries ago, we have had many Supreme Court justices. We have also had 10,000 people killed by one tornado in Kansas. Since I have been president, I’ve now been in 57 states. I think one … Read more

At least they’re fighting the “terrorists,” right?

Terrorists? In my weekly newspaper column back in 2004, I reported on a local training drill that I found to be both outrageous… and insightful as to the mindset of some of those we grant sweeping powers: [T]he Laconia Fire Chief has received “a $60,000 federal Homeland Security grant to test the ability of local … Read more

Bloggers select LEAST favorite people on the left

repulsive lib

Our buddy John Hawkins from RightWingNews.com loves to survey a group he calls "right-of-center bloggers" about a variety of things. This time, he asked for an unranked list of the 1-12 people on the left or generally perceived to be on the left that we most disliked. And he reminded us that "the field is wide open." Here are the five least "most disliked" from the bottom of the resulting list as gathered and tabulated by John:

23) Bill Clinton
23) Katie Couric
23) Al Sharpton
22) Paul Krugman
18) Jimmy Carter

Click here to view the rest. While it might be hard to believe, there are other lefties that are even more disliked than the above list. The whole rogues gallery really makes one’s skin crawl, to be sure.

Here is the list I submitted. You’ll note that I just couldn’t stop at 12:

Right of Center Bloggers Rank Least Favorite Elected Republicans

GOP DOA

Our buddy John Hawkins at RightWingNews has posted part two of the results of his latest "temperature check" of right-of-center bloggers. This was the assignment:

What I’d like you to do is send me two unranked lists of 1-10 elected Republicans (Elected Republicans should be living, in Congress, President, or Governors.)

One list should be 1-10 of your favorite elected Republicans and the other list should be 1-10 of your least favorite elected Republicans.

As I noted in the prior post listing FAVORITE elected Republicans, crafting a list of those I dislike was much easier. Here’s the top three from John’s list, which you can view in its entirety here:

        1. Chuck Hagel (#1-tied)

        2. Arlen Specter (#1-tied)

        3. Olympia Snowe

Heh. The two tied for the number one LEAST liked elected Republicans, according to "right of center bloggers,"  are the same two I first added to my submission. Here’s the entire list, as created for John’s survey:

Self evident truths, abuses, and usurpations…

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, it is worth a few minutes to reflect on what the birth of this “great experiment”, known as America really means. “The Prince” and “The Prince of Providence”

        Buddy C.

        "Buddy C"

I know this has little to nothing to do with anything here in the Granite State, but I figured I’d note it anyway, as it involves one of the most interesting and colorful politicians to ever hit the scene. From the RI Film & TV Office

PLEASE WELCOME THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE

Please join Rhode Island native and renowned Director/Producer Michael Corrente and representatives from the Rhode Island Film & TV Office and the Providence Mayor’s Dept. of Art, Culture and Tourism at 3PM on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Monument in Kennedy Plaza facing Providence City Hall, as Mr. Corrente announces plans for filming his long-awaited political biopic THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE.

The cast includes Dermot Mulroney, Adam Goldberg, Bradley Cooper, Ed Burns and Oliver Platt, who will portray former Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci in the David Mamet adapted screenplay of Michael Stanton’s 2003 book about one of America’s longest-serving mayors.  Robin Williams is currently in negotiations to join this talented group of actors.

"The passion I have for THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE is stronger then any film I’ve made to date. Through much scrutiny and speculation, I’ve spent six long years preparing for this picture. I have painstakingly taken the necessary time to make sure that all my ducks are in a row. This is my home state, and I have an obligation to ensure that the quality of the production matches the brilliance of the material. At the end of the day, and every day does end, nobody ever cares about how long it takes to make a movie; they only care if it’s good", stated Mr. Corrente.

I have not read Mr. Stanton’s book about the Mayor, but I did read another book about a prince. In fact, the name is just that: The Prince, written by Niccolo Machiavelli many centuries before Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci arrived on the scene. And yet, based on my recollection of the years I lived in Rhode Island, and what I’ve heard since I left, one can almost imagine the infamous master political observer would certainly find a degree of familiarity with Providence’s very own "prince".
