Yesterday the Republican Legislators in the New Hampshire House of Representatives elected their Speaker. The election was between former Speakers Bill O’Brien and Gene Chandler. Laurie Sanborn had also been in the race but dropped out due to family health issues. This was the race in which Senator Kelly Ayotte decided to (for the first time anyone can remember) throw her support behind one of the candidates. Former Governor and Senator John Sununu did as well. Unfortunately for them, they picked the losing candidate.

The results are in and Bill O’Brien will be the new Speaker for Republicans in the House. Since Republicans hold a majority in the House, this also means that O’Brien will be the official Speaker of the House once the entire legislature votes. Apparently this has Chairman of the New Hampshire Democrat Party Ray Buckley’s head spinning a little. Buckley sent out a fundraising email shortly after the announcement which of course, is filled with lies.

That from the meme of “Consistency breeds Trust yields Votes”, and yes, NH House Representatives, we at GraniteGrok are unanimous in endorsing Bill O’Brien once again for the most powerful political position in New Hampshire.  Beyond “deserving” it (a hackneyed worn our phrase in this Entitlement Age), he has earned it.  While we have a few nits to pick with Bill (no one is perfect), they are far overshadowed by his results.  Results for New Hampshire that are in line with traditional New Hampshire results – and rolling back those foreign based Progressive ones.

History was made in advance of the election battle for Speaker of the House between past Speakers Bill O’Brien and Gene Chandler…and it’s not pretty.

On November 12, 2014 a group of six “big name Republicans” besmirched themselves and their party by attempting to interfere in the Speaker’s race. The six signers of the letter urged the election of Chandler to the Speakership. By doing so, they actually gave good reason why the new Republican majority should vote for Bill O’Brien.

Three of the miscreants—Kelly Ayotte, Charlie Bass, and Steve Merrill—have never been members of the New Hampshire House, and have neither understanding nor respect for the institution and its independence. Another signer is Doug Scamman, a notorious turncoat who in 2004 betrayed his own party by scheming with the Democrats to get himself elected Speaker. It is nothing short of scandalous that this betrayer of the Republican Party should be signing a letter in favor of Gene Chandler. Except for Kelly Ayotte, who should know better, these people are yesterday’s Republicans trying to pull strings for their old friend Gene Chandler. By sticking their noses into the Speaker’s race, they disgrace themselves and show why the new Republican majority should most definitely elect Bill O’Brien to the Speakership.

20,000 FEMA Katrina projects in limbo years later; feds can’t verify work done

More than nine years after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, billions of tax dollars in recovery funds remain in limbo because the vast majority of federally backed projects in New Orleans have yet to be properly documented.  It is the job of the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, which has administered $14.5 billion in recovery grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency since 2005, to document that the projects were completed according to federal regulations and that there are no outstanding funding issues.

We knew Judicial Watch would be here monitoring our last election, and now we’ve got their intial findings.

While voter identification is a technical requirement in New Hampshire, the law is riddled with loopholes that threaten to render it ineffective as any sort of check on fraud. That’s what a team of Judicial Watch attorneys and volunteer observers, who were in the Granite State on Election Day, determined.

What our team found in New Hampshire was disturbing.

They saw many individuals submitting affidavits in lieu of any actual photo IDs. They also saw extremely high rates of same-day registration. At most of the sites we visited, the same-day registration rate varied between 6-10 percent of all those voting. At one site, the rate was an extraordinary 12.7 percent, or about one out of every 8 voters. At another site, there were at one point three individuals waiting to vote—while another 17 individuals were waiting to same-day register. And some of them had Massachusetts T-shirts.
