Public School Superintendents double dipping

Meet Robert M. Sullivan.  Mr Sullivan, at the age of 58 ( I believe),  ‘retired’ as the Superintendent of the Middleboro Massachusetts School District, where he was earning 128,000.00 per year.  But like many “retired” public school superintendents, he didn’t stay retired for very long.  He’s currently the Superintendent for the six schools that make up SAU #21 in  New Hampshire. (Hampton Falls, North and South Hampton, Seabrook and Winnacunnet Co-op.)

But he’s retired!

“Retired?” Retired, to a Superintendent means you have a new job lined up before you leave the job you retired from, which the retiring Sullivan did.  But while Mr. Sullivan is working in the Granite State he isn’t moving to New Hampshire permanently.  He and his wife are staying in Massachusetts.  Why?

…the out-of-state job will enable Robert M. Sullivan to collect his full Massachusetts pension, estimated to be in the range of $70,000 to $85,000, while also being paid for his new position.

GrokTV Event: Rye RepublicanTown Committee Gala Reception for 2012 GOP Candidates – Intro Ceremonies

This afternoon, the Rye Republican Town Committee held their “Gala Reception for 2012 GOP Candidates” at the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye, NH and GraniteGrok was there to livestream the event. Given such a name for an event, a number of NH GOP candidates vying for seats in 2012 did attend the sold-out crowd of about 250 – 300. The keynote speaker was James O’Keefe, founder of Project Veritas, who Skyped in to give that address.

TEA Party – not dead but more like the political hit man the opposition never sees coming

Certainly it is a talking point of the Democrat, the Obama campaign, and the MSM that the TEA Party is “old news” and can be ignored.  However, as Steve pointed out, that “conventional political wisdom” is dead wrong.  Me?  I think that they JUST want people to think that – frankly, I do believe that they are terrified that events are slipping away from them. Oh, they know full well that the TEA Party is around – and not just kicking but simply like most middle class / working class folk do in flyover country – see a job to be done, not waiting for someone else to do the job, and putting their work ethic in gear to get that job done.

Most of us just quietly go about the job now – the emotional events are done as those were just the intentions.  Unlike Libs for whom “intentions” are the most important issue and raison d’etre, most Conservatives concentrate on the actual results.  And 2010 saw those intentions turned into concrete results in a big way.  Seeing Dick Lugar ousted by the TEA Party, a 35 year incumbent with tons of seniority, shows that there is steel in the TEA Party spine: Principle over Politics.  The Triple threat of the TEA Party principles – free markets, fiscal frugality, Constitutional governance – overrode any thoughts of keeping pure political power.

Courts in multiple states have oft been the agency by which gay marriage has forced upon the residents of those states – the rest have been by Legislatures that oft have been bombarded by “gay money” advocacy groups as we saw here in NH.

Let the people vote?  All the people – where the votes cannot be bought?  They continue to reject it.  Tonite, North Carolina residents just passed an Amendment to their Constitution that legally declares that Marriage is the union of one man and one woman.  That would be 31 States that have enacted such an amendment.  That would be a majority of the States, if my math is still correct.

“Oh, that’s because it’s full of bigots in that Bible Belt state – those Conservative backward looking, knuckle dragging, rednecks that don’t get with the inevitable” will be the excuse.

  • Attorney General Eric Holder:  formerly of Covington and Burling law firm, Holder has represented the Big Banks, such as UBS and MBNA Bank. Holder was Barack Obama’s campaign co-chairman and raised $50,000 for the president’s campaign.
  • Associate Attorney General Thomas Perrelli: a managing partner at Jenner and Block law firm whose clients include Merrill Lynch, Perrelli stepped down from his number three position at DOJ in March. A former member of Obama’s National Campaign Finance Committee, Perrelli has bagged $500,000 in campaign contributions.

Please Keep Your Hands Off My Speech

Political speech is a popular subject these past few days, and seeing as that is what we do here, it should be.  Any slight change about what is defined as paid speech could make what we do very difficult to define financially, and more cumbersome to execute.  Take for example the value of web space or the cost of remote equipment used to broadcast “speech.”  If we are not cautious, these and many other things might become “expenses” for “Speech hobbyists,” like those at GraniteGrok, that would require us to register and file with the Secretary of State.  And failing to do so might invite action from the Attorney General.

So while the goal of speech related legislation may be to identify fly-by-night political groups who gang rape your constituents mail-boxes with lies and hate, the potential collateral damage is much too great.  People forget that lies and hate are protected by the first amendment.  We should have other laws for dealing with that (and not the lefts hate speech laws, a topic for a different post).   Any speech related legislation should not define, value, or in any way complicate the act of speech itself; when you meddle with political speech you always risk placing a gag on it and at the very least risk handing someone else the gag to be applied later.

Smokes and Mirrors – What’s Up With Tobacco Taxes?

smoking - what about the tobacco taxes in New HampshireAll across the the Granite State Democrats have gathered in their secret underground lairs.  The unthinkable has happened.  Tobacco revenues were up last month.   (Audible Gasp!).  That’s right.  Revenues beat estimates.

This is, of course, a double edged sword for the liberal left.   When their grotesque estimates (overall) were forever coming in under target, how many times did they say, “it’s just one month, wait and see.  Give it time, they’ll come around.  We’re not that far off.” No such quarter for Republicans. ( Typical hypocrats.)   At the ugly end of the 2007 to 2010 Democrat “experiment” they were off by about a billion dollars which might suggest they have no clue what they are doing.

But when the Republican’s estimated revenues for their budget the Democrats cried and whined anyway as if they were suddenly experts; the religious left even gathered to pray for more spending.  I’m not kidding.  They prayed for more spending.  The left claimed repeatedly that Republican estimates were purposefully low to punish people.  That is what the left said.

But the overall estimates are close.  Very close.  This means the Democrats were wrong about Republicans underestimating revenue on purpose, which means they were themselves wrong about estimates again (no surprise there).  With revenue nearly in line with spending, bitching about it makes them look petty and just reminds everyone what wretched stewards they were of our tax dollars.

So left hanging without an economic axe to grind they have bet their rhetorical money on the cigarette tax cut.  But they may have lost that bet as well.
