Bachmann’s Contrdiction

Michele BachmanSpeaker Gingrich is taking heat for statements about immigration reform, mostly from people campaigning against him.  (But then, that’s what makes a big primary so much fun.) Congressman Michele Bachmann, on PBS NewsHour of all places, thought she took it to the hole with this remark…

“Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann on Wednesday furthered the attacks on former House Speaker Newt Gingrich over his immigration policies, saying that he moves the most toward the left among the GOP presidential candidates.

“‘He probably has the most liberal position on illegal immigration of any of the candidates in the race,’ Bachmann said in an interview with ‘PBS NewsHour.’”

If you’ve only been dining on the sound bites Newts plan is to secure the border first, then weed through the folks already here.  Good illegals who have no criminal record, (The illegal part of illegal immigration aside) work and agree to pay taxes, learn English, and assimilate, then have to get in line for citizenship but can stay.  Criminal Aliens get the boot.  I only bring it up because this is  proving to be the consensus among the GOP contenders and the party…including, as it turns out, Michele Bachmann.

December 7th, Reagan Library…

HARRIS: A quick 30-second rebuttal on the specific question. The fence is built, the border is under control. What do you do with 11.5 million people who are here without documents and with U.S.- born children?

BACHMANN: Well, that’s right. And again, it is sequential, and it depends upon where they live, how long they have been here, if they have a criminal record. All of those things have to be taken into place.

Sounds a lot like the ‘most liberal position on illegal immigration’ of any of the candidates in the race.  Doh!

I’m still pondering the plans as are they–I suspect–but securing the border first, learning English, and making an effort to assimilate into our culture should be no-brainers.  As for filtering through the mass already here, the criminals have to go.  I’m open to suggestions on everyone else.
