New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu and I agree on several things. Lowering taxes (or eliminating them) is good. Shoring up protections for the right to self-defense is critical. And refusing to fund Berlin’s Burgess Biomass boondoggle was the right thing to do.
We’ve written about the high cost of NH Biomass energy and the redistribution math that costs ratepayers millions. Well, the Governor has a new bill on his desk that would sweeten the deal, but if this is about jobs, it would cost ratepayers less to pay the workers to do nothing.
Y’all know how I feel about Government picking winners and losers. It should butt out. And if a company has placed itself in the loser category by mismanagement (with my only caveat being it is vital to a military or Constitutional mandate), let it BE a loser and disappear into History’s dust bin.
The biomass power debate is virtually ended in New Hampshire. This past week federal regulators declared the NH law to force power companies to buy electricity from wood-burning plants, illegal. Yesterday the plants dropped their court case.
New Hampshire’s Biomass mess is winding down. The Legislature refused to override the governor’s veto on a timber-industry sop. And federal Regulators declared the original law whose veto was overridden invalid. Ratepayers should be cheering.
The Concord Cronyism is reaching new heights as a new effort emerges to use government to force ratepayers to pay more for electricity.
Late last week Biomass energy plants asked the New Hampshire State Supreme Court for a solid. Please force New Hampshire ratepayers to pay 54% above market rates for electricity. If you don’t, we’ll have to shut down.
The NH legislature crafted a scheme to force power companies to buy energy from biomass plants. To “save jobs.” But Biomass plants are closing. Jobs lost. Why? Busy-body legislators.
In the last legisaltive session the New Hampshire (Republican Majority™) legislature overrode Governor Sununu’s veto of the Biomass bailout Bill. SB365 forces electricity providers like Eversource to pay above market rates for power from wood-burning plants. That increase is passed on to consumers.
