State Sen. Cindy Rosenwald Must Disavow Racist Ties

Cindy Rosenwald

When Doris Hohensee was serving on the Nashua Board of Education, she posted a quote on social media from Lothrop Stoddard who was, unknown to her, a eugenicist. The Nashua Democrats made a big stink about the quote. They tried to convince everyone that Hohensee was a racist and must resign from the Board of Ed.

During all of that, the Nashua Democrats never acknowledged, no matter how many times it was pointed out, that Stoddard was handpicked by Margaret Sanger to serve as a board member of the American Birth Control League, which later became Planned Parenthood, and that Sanger herself was a big supporter of eugenics and gave a speech to the Klu Klux Klan.

The New York Times says of Margaret Sanger:

Her legacy also includes supporting eugenics, a discredited belief in improving the human race through selective breeding, often targeted at poor people, those with disabilities, immigrants and people of color.

With the Black Lives Matter movement in the news every day, the chickens have finally come home to roost and Margaret Sanger’s name is being removed from Planned Parenthood of Greater New York’s flagship abortion facility in Manhattan. Karen Seltzer, the chair of Planned Parenthood of New York, said in a statement:

The removal of Margaret Sanger’s name from our building is both a necessary and overdue step to reckon with our legacy and acknowledge Planned Parenthood’s contributions to historical reproductive harm within communities of color.

Will the Nashua Democrats ever admit they support a racist organization? Nashua Senator Cindy Rosenwald was endorsed by Planned Parenthood NH Action Fund in 2018 and will surely be endorsed by them again for 2020. Elections are in November. Nashua deserves better than to be represented by a state senator who would accept the endorsement of an organization founded by eugenicists and which continues to disproportionately target people of color.
