Picture Of The Day 1-9-2011

Some pictures come with stories.  Today’s picture of the day has a story.  But as with all stories it appears to have been embellished. So I have edited out the parts that may not be accurate.  I edited them out because the picture is compelling without them, and they would only serve as a distraction. 

It is a picture taken during surgery on a 21 week old fetus.  It is one of dozens of procedures already performed on unborn babies.  Babies who could spend another 19 weeks in the womb before birth.

It is compelling because this is a surgical procedure in the womb to help a baby.  This is not surgery on a lump of tissue.  It is a tiny person.  The picture is it’s own story.

The picture is that of a 21-week-old unborn baby named Samuel Alexander Armas, who is being operated on by surgeon named Joseph Bruner. The baby was diagnosed with spina bifida and would not survive if removed from his mother’s womb.

Little Samuel’s mother, Julie Armas, is an obstetrics nurse in Atlanta. She knew of Dr. Bruner’s remarkable surgical procedure. Practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, he performs these special operations while the baby is still in the womb.

Watching the news this week, I keep seeing updates on the sailors who are in trouble in the Okhotsk Sea, off eastern Russia, in the Northwest corner of the Pacific ocean. The Sea of Okhotsk is west of the Bering Sea, its southern edge touching the mostly northern islands of Japan.

The crisis is that the sailors are ice-bound – their ships are stuck in the foot-thick ice.  There are multiple stuck ships, with about 500 sailors total.  One of the ships is an icebreaker.  The Sea of Okhotsk is ice-covered from November to June, so ice in this area is not a phenomenon, but this many ships getting stuck is not something that happens very often.

Just the other day, Steve posted a story about "millions of fish dying" in Maryland recently.  The head of Maryland’s environmental agency said it was caused by a "rapid temperature drop" causing "cold water stress".  Well, I’ll be darned.

Yet, even today, scientist and environmentalists are still Quixotically "tilting at windmills" about the Arctic ice melting at alarming rates.  By the way, "Quixotic" is about the best word you could find to describe these people: "Caught up in the romance of noble deeds and the pursuit of unreachable goals; idealistic without regard to practicality".  Problem is, they are trying to shape our political and cultural world to match this flawed nobility.

I found this article from way back in the first days of 2007, when Al Gore was in his glory because parts of the world were seeing higher temperatures, drier weather, and the arctic ice cap was at a low since satellite monitoring had begun in 1979.  In it, NASA Goddard Space Center’s chief enviro-chicken-little James E. Hansen claimed that "unless international efforts are launched within the next 10 years, species will disappear and the Earth will be a vastly less habitable planet by the end of the century."

Lube Job Redux

It’s been fun to watch the Soap Opera unfold after AIDS Services got caught up in a kerfuffle over ‘sex kits’ distributed at Monadnock High School. Everyone went into CYA mode as what seemed like a perfectly normal activity for progreeive thinkers, hiding behind the AIDS quilt to advocate irresponsible underage sex, met the reality of public outrage.

The political knives are out over the shooting…

Yup, Elwood over at Blue Hampshire is trying to be oh, so sophisticated about it. Just in case they try to walk it backwards, I scraped it – see after the jump.

The police are describing him as "troubled".  Here, they are saying that Jared Loughner is NOT a TEA Partier, NOT a conservative, NOR Right Wing but a Left Wing Liberal.  In fact, as I re-posted here, one of this whack job’s favorite books are:

  • Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx (no Right Winger)
  • Mein Kampf by Adolph Hitler (no Right Winger, as he started the Nationalist Socialist party) 

From the early reports I have seen, however, I think the major problem with him is not that he is Liberal but that he has severe mental problems, and that the politics are a red herring (whether or not it turns out that he as Left, Right, or somewhere else).

Oh Yeah, elwood (ranting before all the facts – sure, why not?):

6. America is threatened by a loosely organized mob of bitter and irrational people who pull secondary triggers. They ratchet up hateful rhetoric – the Obama / Joker posters are one example, the Palin crosshair ads are another, the "Second Amendment remedies" language of GOP Senate nominee Sharon Angle is another.

7. "Guns don’t kill people." And by that same logic, lone nuts don’t. The real trigger is the hate-filled apocalyptic rhetoric. The real gun is the lone nut.  The real assassin is the angry, self-righteous mob.  

8. New Hampshire has become a playground for this mob.

What was that line from Star Wars?  Oh yeah: "nice going, hairball".  Wait for the info, the facts (you do claim to be from the "reality based community", right?), before immediately lashing out.  Look, the Army rejected him, he’s been in legal problems before, it seems that he may be delusional.

Making political points on the back of a someone suffering from mental problems?  Yeah, real compassionate, elwood.  Good judgment call, that.

Sick people are sometimes just that – sick. If true, elwood deserves the opprobrium his words warrant.  Again, if he is competent to stand trial, classify him not as political but just plain evil.

Update: What is with these Blue Hampsters?  Do they think / dream evil all day long?  One person who is sick, also of Blue Hampshire, is Mike Hoefer is just dreaming his number one scenario:

AND! Imagine what would have happend if a gunman did this in the State House the envisioned by the NH Republican Party.

… Tragedy in Concord NH today as several lawmakers and members of the gallery returned fire when a distraught gunman opened fire on on a young woman testifying on behalf of Mariage Equity. A third grader from Keene on a field trip to the capitol was caught in the crossfire and  is in critical condition at Concord Hospital… Stay tuned for more information as it become available…

I sit here in just about disbelief. Then I remind myself: Blue Hampshire – it fits.  The actual picture that is being painted as people dig for facts is one of severe mental problems – with politics involved as a manifestion – LIBERAL politics, if the report above is to be believed (and being "early info", let’s wait and see on that too).

It didn’t happen that way! MacDonald’s video was doctored!

There’s a picture below of Nancy Pelosi showing her with a bottle of Tabasco after she gave up the power she wielded on behalf of the political/government/ruling classes for the past four years. That picture is a true depiction of the former-Spaaker. But immediatley below that is a video clip that Steve MacDonald put in, and it was doctored! John Boehner never whacked Pelosi with the gavel in the way the video shows. No! It was subtly changed to make Boehner look more modereate! Watch  MacDonald’s video two posts below…and then watch this one, and you’ll see what really happened at the gavel-passing ceremony. The difference is subtle, but important. Don’t Get Buzzed…

I listen to the highly rated “Morning Buzz” radio show on occasion, as I drive to work in the morning (WGIR-Manchester FM 101.1).  Over the past few days, the crew has been talking about their invitation and attendance yesterday, to the inauguration of New Hampshire’s Governor, John Lynch.

I’ve heard enough.  The slobbering and celebrity worshipping that host Greg Kretchmar and co-host Andy Blacksmith are making over Lynch is excessive and embarrassing; let me tell you why.

One of the problems we have in this country is an over-indulgent appreciation (no, worship) of celebrities, which includes athletes.  Logically speaking, this really isn’t that big of a deal, until you start to look at some of the people that we worship, their behavior, and the bad examples they set.

There are plenty of celebrities and athletes I could mention here, and the bad ones outnumber the good – but that’s not the critical point.

What’s really a problem is when we start to worship and idolize politicians, like the Morning Buzz crew are doing, and have been doing, over John Lynch for quite some time.  When we do it, we run the same, if not bigger risk by validating a politician who has set a bad example: John Lynch is a great example.

Morning Buzz Tip #1: Politicians are public servants, not celebrities

When we idolize politicians, we lose sight of two very important things: 1) We elect them to serve us and our best interests, and 2) They have control of a lot of money and granted power – our money and power – which they will abuse if we don’t pay attention and watch them very carefully.

Unemployment- Is the Good News Bad?

The percentage went down to 9.4% for December but is that a good thing? We will have to wait until we get the January numbers to shake out the holiday hiring but overall it is not strong news.
