Abstracted from “New York City chain stores shutter as lockdowns kill businesses and New Yorkers flee“: Big brand stores have closed their doors in New York City after months of coronavirus lockdowns.

  • At least 1,132 chain stores closed their doors in the city during 2020.
  • The stores closed include 70 Duane Reades, 54 Starbucks, and 22 Papyruses
  • Manhattan saw 546 stores closing because of lockdowns that shut out tourists and people who worked in the borough and because many people left the city.
  • Victoria’s Secret closed 10 stores
  • Old Navy closed six
  • Shake Shack closed five
  • GNC closed 51
  • Subway closed 48
  • MAC Cosmetics closed 25

The news comes as people have fled the city amid strict lockdowns and an increase in crime. And those are just the retail stores.

Given that one of the lures of NYC was its reputation as a foodie haven, hundreds if not thousands of eateries have closed.  See MSN for a running list.
