The San Francisco Bay Area is home to powerful progressive politicians. There’s House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Governor Gavin Newsom. Yes, and don’t forget U.S. Senator and vice-presidential hopeful Kamala Harris. It’s producing a disproportionate number of influential political actors, all leftists.

They have lots of campaign money backing them. But what kind of results do their policies produce? The city of San Francisco is in trouble. So it may be instructive to look at the system which reared these individuals.
San Francisco consistently ranks among the worst tax and spend offenders. The city has about 896,000 people in it and a $1.5 billion budget deficit. It also has 18,759 employees bringing home pay packages worth $150,000 or more annually.
There are truck drivers hauling away for $262,898 and city painters painting for over $270,190. They have firefighters that earn $316,306 and plumbing supervisors making $348,291 per year. One deputy sheriff earned $574,595 last year which includes $315,896 in overtime. Good paying jobs if you can get them.
Does the mayor’s office lead by example?
On average, the city’s 44,526 employees received pay and perks averaging $131,335 apiece. Four out of ten, that’s 18,749 city workers, receive compensation packages exceeding $150,000 per year. San Francisco Mayor London Breed cost taxpayers $452,421. He’s the highest-paid mayor in the country. Breed enjoys a $342,974 salary. He gets an additional $109,447 in benefit perks. There are another 31 staffers in her office with total comp exceeding $200,000 annually.
There are a combined 4,418 employees of the city’s law enforcement agencies. These personnel cost taxpayers $831 million in compensation last year. That’s an average cost of over $188,000 per person. The police are “peace officers.”
San Francisco is a progressive utopia. Nobody seems to care in the least about the taxpayers’ ability to pay. No thought is being given to the dollars paid versus the value received. Why is it reasonable to spread this contagion nationally? Do we really want to get our leadership from San Francisco?
