Freedom Without Morality Inevitably Leads to Tyranny

Constitutional Convention

The Founders knew freedom without morality inevitably leads back to tyranny if each man is free to do what is right in the sight of his own eyes. If there is no common, objective standard of right and wrong, good and evil, what is to stop the strong from oppressing the weak?

From Federalist 51: “If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.”

By establishing the Constitution, the Founders sought to balance mankind’s competing interests. We have freedom and power counterbalanced by limiting government. America is a grand experiment. It rests on the idea; To avoid cultural chaos from which tyranny emerges men will exercise self-discipline.

The source of truth and morality

Where did this common notion of “goodness” come from? The answer is in the first words of the First Amendment to the Constitution. Freedom of religion preserves the proper role of religion in a free society. There is only one source of objective morality and truth. It is the same God who made all men equal. Religion points men to God.

As John Adams notes, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

The blessings of liberty ever since have been uniquely American.
