The Biden-Harris Ticket on Religious Freedom

by

The Biden-Harris ticket has a position on religious freedom. Joe Biden promises to protect religious freedom… except when it is politically inconvenient. Both he and Harris advocate policies contrary to the religious convictions of many Americans. Joe and Kamala know the right words to say. We all have a right to practice our faith openly, or to practice no faith at all.

It’s just Joe and Kamala do not believe that. We know that is true because they do not act based upon that position. Biden and his running mate are pushing to require Catholic nuns to pay for birth control. They know this is against their religious beliefs. How is that demonstrating support for free exercise of religion? Actions speak louder than words.

Biden’s plan states that “America was built on a foundation of religious freedom and tolerance” and promises to provide increased security grants to religious communities, establish a faith based law enforcement program, strengthen prosecution of hate crimes, “take on the NRA and gun manufacturers… We all have a right to practice our faith openly, or to practice no faith at all…”

Both Biden and Harris support tax payer funded abortions. Both push for Catholic nuns to pay for birth control against their religious beliefs. Yet the media often call Biden a “devout” Catholic. He is not devout. He is not even observant. Maybe Joe’s a practicing Catholic, but he’s practicing because he can’t get it right.

Actions speak louder than words

Harris suggests those who subscribe to mainstream Catholic doctrine may be unfit for office. How does she really feel about Biden’s capacity to be President? Kind of makes you wonder if she thinks she’s running for President. That was her assessment during evaluation of Brian Buescher for a Nebraska district judge seat in 2018. The California senator highlighted Buescher’s association with a Catholic charity organization. The Knights of Columbus (KOC) she noted opposes abortion.

The KOC supports the Catholic doctrine. This includes the doctrine that abortion is “a crime against human life.” It also supports marriage should be between a man and a woman. Harris asked,

“Since 1993, you have been a member of the Knights of Columbus, an all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men,” Harris said in a written question. “In 2016, Carl Anderson, leader of the Knights of Columbus, described abortion as ‘a legal regime that has resulted in more than 40 million deaths.’ Mr. Anderson later said ‘abortion is the killing of the innocent on a massive scale…. Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?”

Harris also questions whether Buescher was “aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed marriage equality when [he] joined the organization” as well as whether Buescher “ever, in any way, assisted with or contributed to advocacy against women’s reproductive rights.”

The constitution expressly forbids religious litmus tests for public office. How do Biden and Harris defend this bigotry? It is Democrat Party dogma, but it is also anti-American. How do they not understand they are breaking the law justifying bigotry? How do they not understand they are also violating federalism? The Biden-Harris ticket has a position on religious freedom. It’s a shame their actions don’t match their words.
