As we scrabble about in search of a path back to normal the critical question to my mind is what will normal be? Look around you. With very little information and a few projections that were outrageously wrong, a majority of Americans knelt before the State and complied with its demands.

You can’t edit that fact out of existence. Not with speeches or protests or web sites like GraniteGrok. Its presence has not gone unnoticed by people interested in repeating it to advance other goals.
Yes, “Normal” could conceivably look similar to life before 2020 but only the same way that a terror hostage released after captivity looks the same on the outside after a bath and perhaps a shave.
And while many of us as individuals, families, friend groups, and even communities could go back to the appearance of normal the Republic’s sinister little secret is out of the box.
I don’t think of it as an inoperable condition. But to repair it we will need the support and attention of at large chunk of the mask-wearing, shelter-in-place population. People who are willing to separate fact from fiction as the dust settles.
We have been lied to repeatedly. The action was an overreaction. Once imposed those in power are reluctant to go back. They will skew the data to continue the political remedy. And a critical add on as we try to roll back restrictions, call it a prediction. Faced with pressure to back off the State will look for ways to increase testing to show more infections not less even when that number is not only meaningless but detrimental to their argument.

Whether the end result is fewer deaths than the typical flu or more the damage has been done. The spin will claim victory through tyranny. They saved lives by suppressing your rights.
If enough people are convinced, and you can gauge that by going out in public and looking at the number of young (ish), health people wearing gloves and masks then we’ll forever be beholden to the idea, to paraphrase from New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, they have been convinced that Public Health Trumps Everything.
Avoiding that future will require a good deal of work and attention. Candidates committed less toward lockdowns and more toward liberty. I am happy to lend whatever influence I may have. And I am familiar with the folks around me who will gird up for this fight. But we’ve been in the fight for years.
And this is where we’ve landed.
Whatever America looks like on the other side of this, it will not be the same. What it looks like will depend on who we elect to public office and how diligent we are at ensuring they keep their promises. That was critical before the Chinese Flu. That importance just elevated by several levels of magnitude.
