Remember, this is the Party that booed the idea of God being in their Platform during their 2012 Convention. Given that our Founders leaned heavily on Judeo-Christian values as they created our country, that was quite problematic. And this ain’t helping things.
But Americans don’t consider the Democratic candidates to be particularly religious, according to a new Pew Research Center survey that covers four of the top contenders: Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
…Though Sanders is the only candidate who is described as “not too” or “not at all” religious by a majority of Americans, public opinion also leans more toward the view that Buttigieg and Warren are not very religious. For instance, 25% say Buttigieg is “not too” religious and 13% say he’s “not at all” religious, while 28% view him as “somewhat” religious and 4% say he’s “very” religious. Buttigieg is an openly gay, churchgoing Episcopalian who speaks regularly about his faith. When campaigning, he often emphasizes his differences with religious conservatives and says that “God does not belong to a political party.”
Go to the link (below) and see how Republicans view this issue (spoiler: much, much less).
Note: Buttigieg may talk about God and religion but it is clear that his beliefs are far from being traditional Christian heterodoxy (but then, again, neither is the Episcopalian Church in many congregations).
If you don’t believe in a Higher Power, then what generally seems to happen is that you make yourself that Higher Power (either individually or in the collective sense). Then, that which was our foundation value system is up for grabs. If you don’t believe that there is a God, or Nature’s God (as the Founders put it), there is no “inalienable” factor to any of our Rights. Instead of being absolute and inviolate, they then become either malleable to be bent in any way needed, or not needed at all.
The sense of respect for them can be tossed away. In fact, I believe that is what we are seeing today – Rights are things to be politicized rather than honored in and of themselves. It is one reason why there is such a chasm between we Conservatarians (that do believe in those Rights) and the Socialists / Marxists (let’s face it, the “Democrats” are now gone) on the Left.
