“A generation that doesn’t know history has no past; and no future.”-Robert Heinlein (science fiction writer, author, speaker, and “source for” part of the GraniteGrok name)
The problem is that the generations that have followed the Boomers (not that the majority of the Boomer Generation is all that history literate) have become less and less knowledgeable (and less interested) in our history.
What we are seeing now, especially with those in and just getting out of college, is a failure to know and understand our history and the reasons/philosophies driving that history. How else could one surmise the root of our young’uns gravitating towards Socialism? If you don’t know where you’ve been, how do you know that where you’re going is in the right direction? If you don’t know OUR past and the reasonings that our Founders used in formulating our founding documents, of course, you’ll fall for anything that says “what’s wrong with free EVERYTHING?”
Heck, it seems that the younger generation doesn’t even know the last 100 years of history – and our education system has consigned anything earlier to the dustbin of nothingness when I listen to these know-nothing kids.
Sidenote: Our Budget Committee was given a high-level presentation on the Gilford School District’s budget that we are supposed to go over. We have a teacher-paraprofessional/student ratio that is FAR smaller than what the NH Dept of Education proposes.
We’re overstaffed and we do pay that price as well. One of the items that Superintendent Kirk Beitler announced was that they were cutting a 1/2 time Civics/Social Science teacher from the staff. I should be joyful in seeing an overloaded budget cut even if fairly slightly concerning the totality of the budget.
Given what I am seeing during the Gilford School Board’s attempts to put in the NHSBA Policy JBAB (Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Students”), I am going to overrule my better tendencies and demand that this 1/2 teacher Social Science position, pursuant to them actually teaching an actual Civics curriculum, be put back.
I’ll be putting up more on the battle I have against this policy, NOT because I am “transphobic” but because basic Civics knowledge and history is completely lacking both by the ACLU Trans Project but by the School Board and Superintendent Kirk Beitler of basic terms of Powers and Rights, Natural Rights, Political Subdivisions, and the like. And his rather stupid statement on “invading other students’ rights”.
I am completely agog at how illiterate are the kids; it’s even worse when you contemplate their school’s “Leadership.” If they actually KNEW our History (as Heinlein foretold), we wouldn’t be having this discussion at all.
(H/T: Instapundit where Ed Driscoll also adds this: “A generation that doesn’t know history has no past; and no future.” And that’s just the way the “Start from zero” left likes it.”
