“No practical significance“
I guess that pesky First Amendment is just passe; of no account whatsoever even as US Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) swore an oath to protect and preserve it. Criticize ME? Clap him into the stocks! Leg irons for any that diss we who are your betters.
If she truly believes what she said, we are in deep sneakers in this country. She serves in the third highest elected office in the country (President, Senate being first and second highest) and she believes she is not beyond dissent? That because of her “office”, we should treat her as a Queen during the Middle Ages. Does she really believe that The State should act against those that criticize its “members”? Problem is, she’s not alone. Sure, she’s one that can safely be called part of the “Looney Left” – but there are others that share that “American value”.
And that’s the point – what IS happening to our traditional American Values? Are we not allowed our Free Speech? Is Government now willing to follow the Culture instead of the Constitution? We see the Left with its Political Correctness, Antifa with its violence, tech companies shadow or outright banning speech from the Right, silencing through language redefinition, other-than-tech companies choosing cultural/political sides – and elected Progressive/Socialists clamping down on our choices.
It just isn’t what is encased in our foundational law but what is the cultural norms. Both, I’m afraid, are under attack.
