To stop Illegal immigration or not to stop illegal immigration

By Marc Abear

With Election Day near we should be aware of the Left’s priorities most especially when it is supported by action. Their priorities added to their basic lack of understanding of the separation of powers help us see useful facts when making Election Day decisions. In trying to help the Left on Election Day, Eliot Engel, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a Democrat from New York has taken a stand on illegal immigration.

The president said he would cut off foreign aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras if they aided or failed to curtail the caravan of illegal immigrants headed north. Engel believes the President lacks the authority to make that decision. The Washington Examiner reports Engel said, “Trump lacks the authority to make those decisions unilaterally due to a law called the Impoundment Control Act… Fortunately, Congress — not the president — has the power of the purse, and my colleagues and I will not stand idly by as this administration ignores congressional intent.”

The Constitution does grant Congress the power of the purse. The Constitution also places responsibility for American foreign policy with the executive branch. Representative Engel can feign fidelity to the Constitution but he should read and understand it first. The question we should be asking is whether or not the priorities of Representative Engel and his party are the safety and security of the American People?

The President made clear his intention and the reason for it. He is making American aid contingent on the cooperation of foreign governments in controlling the flow of illegal immigration. It may take a Supreme Court ruling to decide the issue. In the meantime we are getting another clear snapshot of Democrat priorities: They do not want to stop illegal immigration. They want to keep sending taxpayer money to the countries unwilling to control their borders. They do not care who enters the country or what their intentions might be. They are supportive of not dealing with border control and the illegal immigration problem. If they cared they would have dealt with the matter in the eight years they had to address the matter. They did not do so.

The President is concerned with stopping terrorists and criminals from entering the U.S. He cares about the security of the border. He intends enforcement of American law.  Among the duties of the president is to protect our national security. Clearly the president is focused on that. It does not appear Engel and his Leftist Party share that interest.

Potential terrorists do enter the U.S. from our southern border. In September, Judicial Watch reported: “Yet another group of migrants from a terrorist nation managed to infiltrate the United States through Mexico this week…  The men are from Bangladesh, a south Asian Islamic country that’s well known as a recruiting ground for terrorist groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS)…”

Engel’s view of how to secure our borders and stop illegal immigration is to keep dumping taxpayer money into other countries without accountability for results. According to the Examiner, Engel said: “… The best way to keep Central Americans from migrating to the United States is to continue investing in their communities so that they are not forced to make the dangerous trek north…” Representative Engel’s certainly doing a fine job of espousing the Democratic Party’s position on national security and illegal immigration. Bribe ‘m to stay home.

We used to all be Americans. The safety of the American people did not used to take a back seat to partisan party politics. We used to articulate the problem, implement a plan to solve it, and hold ourselves accountable to results. But it’s a good day when American voters get a clear picture of what they are voting for. We need a positive vision for positive future. Vote early, vote often.
