Greg Sargent from the Washington Post is reporting that Pelosi, in a call to bloggers, wants no part of a fix to Medicare.
Pelosi — who is widely viewed as the person most responsible for ensuring that Dems drew a hard line against Bush’s privatization proposals — said that so doing would have persuaded people that there must have been something wrong with Social Security that needed fixing. She suggested that Dems should keep that message in mind as they prepare to do battle over Ryan’s Medicare proposals.
How else do you take that?
Pelosi stood against reforming a bankrupt retirement scheme, and now she is taking the same tack here: Medicaid should not be reformed lest it appear as if it needs reform.
Problem? Aside from the obvious, does this make the Democrats the party of No? The party of business as usual? The party of unsustainable debt and a Washington that doesn’t work? The party of partisanship? Of course it does. But that’s nothing new. That is who they are.
