The Job of Creating New Jobs – How We Can Get Granite Staters Back to Work

When I was campaigning for Congress last year, I told voters that helping get people back to work was very important to me.  I meant it then, and I still mean it now.  That’s why I am conducting a major jobs initiative this week, bringing together job creators (the small business owners that are the backbone of New Hampshire’s economy), people looking for work, and your Representative in Congress.  Together, we’re discussing ways Washington can help and what it should do (or in some cases not do) to help businesses grow and create new jobs.

You see, in the free enterprise system, things work best when the private sector creates jobs and government plays a supporting, encouraging role.  Government can assist the private sector by protecting it from over taxation, over regulation and limiting its intrusion into our daily lives.  Government can create an economic environment for businesses to expand with confidence by handling our nation’s finances responsibly, which in turn creates the predictability that companies need to plan for tomorrow.  That is the best recipe for job creation.

You know, this would be more fun if he could actually articulate an argument.

As regular readers know, I am wont to go back into recent history to "repurpose" stuff I have created on email and Facebook threads. I toyed with the title of the post:

  • Tying up a Lefty in knots?
  • Vocabulary matters in debates?
  • A mighty run, jump….splat?
  • Gay marriage advocate left speechless

There were others, but failed to write them down, so they’re gone for good (and better than the above, too).  However, even though the the topic is on gay marriage, it really is illustrative when folks who have oft been accused to defend their values and philosophy (er, that would be we Groksters) decide to confront a Liberal and force him to defend his (a bit comedic value to boot).  In essence, we primarily wanted the debate (the issue being somewhat secondary). And!

Blithering ensues.

Back Story: back when Jack Kimball won the race for NH GOP Chair, RLCNH Chair Andrew Hemingway (On FaceBook) made an announcement to that effect that was picked up by the NY Times:

Andrew Hemingway, chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire, said Mr. Kimball’s win was evidence that the Tea Party and similar groups were pushing the state’s Republican Party to the right. Mr. Hemingway’s group helped a large number of conservatives, including many with Tea Party support, win election to the state legislature in the fall. 

Keith David Halloran (gay marriage supporter) then decided to take that snippet by Andrew Hemingway and twist it, hectoring Andrew because what Halloran wanted was an answer to suit himself (reality and plain hearing of plain speaking seemingly not established quality for  Mr. Halloran).  Given that Andrew is a ‘Grok friend, we fulfilled our mantra of "…flying to the aid of rock ribbed Conservatives everywhere!". 

Now, the question and what should have been the definitive answer that should have ended the question.

FB Doodlings – Evergreen Clause, public unions, educational quality

A while ago, ‘Grok’s friend NH State Representative George Lambert started a thread discussing NH SB1 which would repeal to the Evergreen Clause (now passed).  Simply put, Evergreen meant that all union contracts compensation agreements would remain in force if the two parties could not agree on a new contract.   I jumped in after seeing a reply complaining that the public should not be involved in the negotiation process (edited to fit a more bloggish format) :

Before Evergreen, if a public sector union did not get a contract resolved, the situation remain static; people had their jobs (e.g., teachers) and current pay / benefits while negotiations proceeded. Please note: if the employees do not like the conditions, they can leave and get a job somewhere better. Remember, NO one is entitled to anything – including a job.  The problem with Evergreen is that the other side, the taxpayers, have no recourse. They have to pay the additional costs regardless of the expired contract. There is no way to "win" in this situation.

With respect to crying over the fact that teachers and public servants are "drastically underpaid" compared to entertainers and sports stars because of misplaced societal values

  • They are not drastically underpaid and certainly not at the bottom either (do your homework vis-a-vis average / median wage comparisons which are open source available).
  • Top level entertainers are not overly paid either.

If they really feel that they are severely underpaid, why would public service workers stay in the job? That would mean that they are stupid; I doubt that.
