Co-founder of GraniteGrok, my concern is around Individual Liberty and Freedom and how the Government is taking that away. “The need for countries to maximize their take from their citizens”…Really? Is that all we are?

OK, this snippet is from the Economist of about a year ago (yeah, spending the last of my frequent flier miles on magazine subscriptions.  Hey, it allows me to sample some stuff for a short period of time that I wouldn’t ordinarily purchase).

It certainly is a Euro-centric philosophy expressed in its pages – and Big State to boot.  Oh certainly, from time to time, I’ve been surprised that they’ve agreed with my outlook on something.  That said, I could not say that their outlook other than Statist and almost always side with growing Govt.

Can you spot what caught my eye?  Oh, heck, I’ll make it easy for you:

High-tax European governments have complained in the past about competition from countries like Ireland; the current crisis may lead to more calls for co-ordination of tax policies.  Indeed, many countries will be raising taxes simultaneously, which may reduce the temptation for businesses to shift.  much depends on where countries start; it shouldd be easier for those iwth lower tax burdens to increase their take.

Higher earners can also be mobile.  So many French professionals moved to London in the past decade that Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s president, pleaded with them (and offered tax deals) to come back.  Britain is gradually losing its appeal to high-earning foreigners.  calculations by pricewaterhouseCoopers, an accounting firm, show that British authorities will take a bigger tax bite out of the pay packet of a married exutive earning 250K Sterling ($370K) than any other G20 nation except Italy.

Take a deep breath – the real battle over spending cuts is just starting

Late last week, Congress reached a deal to keep the federal government funded until the current fiscal year ends on September 30th.  When it is passed, the lengthy headache caused when the previous Nancy Pelosi-led Congress failed to pass a budget for this year will finally be over.

The deal also contains $38.5 billion in spending cuts.  That’s the largest spending cut in American history, and it officially slams the brakes on the “stimulus spending binge” of recent years (which doesn’t seem to have stimulated much of anything beyond our national debt).

It’s a good start, but there’s much more work to do.  When we’re facing a $1.6 trillion dollar federal deficit, trimming spending by $38.5 billion is barely a drop bucket.  We need to cut trillions of dollars, not billions.  And that’s where the new GOP budget enters the scene.   The House Budget Committee, which I serve on, unveiled our spending plan for Fiscal Year 2012, which starts on October 1st.  Where the Pelosi Congress failed to provide leadership, we delivered — and we delivered the major spending cuts that Granite Staters are rightfully demanding.

Congress now gets to choose between two very different spending plans, President Obama’s and ours.  When you stack the two side by side and compare them, you see a stark difference.

Our budget, called the Path to Prosperity, takes a machete to spending and sends it spiraling downward.  It cuts a whopping $6.2 trillion over a decade compared to the Obama budget,…

This is one of those “cool” things that needs to be watched…beautiful…

The interposing of technology over the arts over geo-spatial locations: a community literally and simply of the mind and video.

Back in the 80s, I was a deacon at my church and we had a day-long "getaway" planning meeting to plot the short and mid term direction of the church.  At the time, I was at DEC and was used to the online community there (rather unique, at that time, spanning a world-wide set of folks using tools like VTX, VAXNotes, and email – a precursor to what is now the Internet).  I said at the time the the "Church" would go electronic and virtual, as some of the relationships I had were as tight as some in the real world.  The others of my age pondered that for a moment, and agreed.  Those in their late 50’s and 60s looked at me as if I was some wild-eyed, wild-haired nutcase – "how could that be??" was the reaction.

Now we know better – as it is here and virtually ubiquitous.  And when I saw this on Cafe Hayek, I saw that in another way, that virtual community of which I could not convince the real elders of that physical community, could actually exist and collaborate.
