Trump is saying a lot of things about the Panama Canal, Greenland…and, of course, Canada. Frankly, while he may be more than just “Trumping” a bit here, and trolling denizens in those areas (he’s certainly riled up most of the EU elite talking about Greenland), I think this talk is directed at someone else. I’ll post about that later on.
So, Visual Capitalist has, due to the politics du jour, decided to show how Canada, our possible 51st State, would shape up compared to the current US States. It would become the largest one (unless, for “political balancing” purposes, it was chopped up into several states). But what about a few other metrics?
It would be an economic powerhouse on a purely GDP basis, but it would be the 2nd poorest State in the union, with only Mississippi being the poorest, EVEN WITH a higher percentage of College Degree holders (er, how does THAT work in a 40-million-person country?).
But it would be a peaceful “leave everyone else alone” state with a homicide rate that rivals NH’s.
Hey, at least there’s one thing going for it – Prime Minister / Tyrant / WEF: “You will own nothing and be happy,” and accolyte Justin Trudeau would be gone.
Speaking of previous “annexations”:
- Louisiana Purchase (1803): Acquired 827,987 square miles from France for $15 million.
- Florida (1819): Purchased from Spain for $5 million in assumed claims under the Adams-Onís Treaty.
- Alaska (1867): Bought from Russia for $7.2 million, adding 591,000 square miles to U.S. territory.
- Gadsden Purchase (1853): Acquired 29,670 square miles from Mexico for $10 million.
- Virgin Islands (1917): Purchased from Denmark for $25 million.
- Philippine Islands (1898): Acquired from Spain for $20 million following the Spanish-American War, though it gained independence in 1946.
- Gadsden Purchase (1854): Bought nearly 77,000 square kilometers (29,729 square miles) from Mexico for $10 million, now parts of Arizona and New Mexico.
I do wonder why Denmark doesn’t want to do business with US again – or are they still steamed about selling us the Virgin Islands?
