Where Does Jeb Bradley Stand on The Minimum Wage?

The New Hampshire Democrat Party is wondering where Republican State Senator (and likely candidate for higher office) Jeb Bradley stands on the minimum wage?  I confess, so do I.

Does State Senator Bradley embrace the left’s obsessive desire to depress employment among teens and minorities by using legislative force to define the value of labor or is he more inclined to let the person whose labor it is come to an agreement with an employer over the real value of their time and skill-set with regard to the position in which they are to be retained?

The New Hampshire Democrat position is that modern day Granite State employees and employers are simply too stupid or corrupt to be permitted to define these terms without government interference.  Is that Senator Bradley’s position as well?

State Rep. Cynthia Chase made herself famous not that long ago when she wrote “In the opinion of this Democrat, Free Staters are the single biggest threat” to achieving socialism in New Hampshire. Well…she didn’t actually say “achieving socialism.” I just added that to make her thought process clearer (after all, she’s a recent import from Rhode Island). Casino Bill was Defeated by Large Margin, 199-164 [Updated and Bumped]

Casino bill was defeated by large margin, 199-164. I thought it would be close.

I thought it would be closer as well but gambling is one of those issues that has broad bi-partisan opposition.    There are factions on the left that are hard core progressive wellsprings that oppose gambling as if they actually had morals or something.  And I think Hassan over-reached when she presented a budget as if the gambling money was a given.

Bad idea.   I think that turned the Democrats who might have considered easing into it on the other side of a fence they were too pissed off to cross.

And let us face facts. Gambling is just not a good fit for the Granite state given the dynamics of the region, it has not delivered on its promises in the Northeast, and in the end it is a crutch for growing government on more false promises.

Update: According to Jim Rubens from the Granite State Coalition Against Expanded Gambling, after the Casino vote there was a motion to reconsider.  That motion failed 212-155.

How Much Mileage Can We Get Out Of This? (Updated & Bumped)

Update! – The Democrats claim they needed the Monday Caucus so that both sides could give their views on the Casino Bill, and that this was a legitimate purpose for which they could exact a mileage reimbursement on a Monday, but Wednesday morning of the same week, before the session and vote on the Casino Bill,  the Democrats held a caucus at which they discussed…. the Casino bill.  Democrat Governor Maggie Hassan even came to that Caucus to make her final pitch for the legislation.

“Please remember that mileage reimbursement will only be paid for travel on Mondays and Fridays for statutory committees which meet on those days,” Norelli wrote in the April 26 edition of the House Calendar.

But this Monday, House Democrats held a closed-door caucus that didn’t appear in last week’s calendar. Norelli’s spokesman, Mario Piscatella, said the caucus was held to discuss the casino bill, with members on both sides of the issue presenting their views followed by a discussion.

That doesn’t sound like a statutory committee.  And yet 78 Democrats–the attendees of the “Caw!-cus” –all requested mileage reimbursement.

New Hampshire State Senate Nixes Medicaid Expansion in Budget

By a vote of 4 – 2 Senate budget writes have ‘Just said No’ to the proposed Medicaid expansion option tied to the “Eliminate Any Hope Of Affordable Care Act,” frequently misrepresented as the ‘Affordable Care Act,’ or ObamaCare.  Speaking for the majority, State Senate Majority Leader Peter Bragdon, who happens to be State Senator, said something incredibly intelligent.

“I’m not a big fan of spending a whole lot of money on something that seems to me to have some doubts as to whether or not it is effective.”

To which I would add, “Oh, Yeah- so why do we still have RGGI?”

Cheap shot.  Sorry.

Well he happens to be right in this case.  And don’t be fooled by the fools like Senator D’Allesanrdo who say things like this…

SB48 passed the House Ed Committee. 

The good news is that both the Democrats and Republicans had ISSUES with ASSESSING “Dispositions”. That word was removed with an amendment.

Unfortunately schools will be labeled “Priority” and “Focus” schools based upon the standardized assessment results.

This means that if your students do not perform well on the standardized assessment that is ALIGNED TO COMMON CORE, your school could end up identified as a “Priority or Focus” school.

Majority Report on SB152 The Casino Gambling Bill

Will Republians roll the dice on Gambling in New Hampshire

I don’t typically post reports from the House Journal because I am not flush with the time necessary to read them on any sort of regular basis. But the committee vote on SB152, the most recent effort to plop a Casino somewhere on the New Hampshire landscape, was close–and just happened to go my way.  What better incentive than that to report the results of that report…?

…to see what the bipartisan committee saw that inspired them to suggest, not so much that any Casino would be bad for New Hampshire–which is my position–but that SB152 was just a lousy effort at getting one even if you were in favor of it.

Pro-SB11 PR Campaign Underway…

Supporters of SB 11, the bill that would allow a new layer of bureaucracy for the purpose of taxing and managing intermunicipal water districts, are waging a public relations campaign on the premise that the opponents of the bill are seeing things that are not there.  Unfortunately for them, the real problem is that there is nothing in the bill to prevent any of the things we see.

Call us cynical but we do not trust rules-makers and bureaucrats to imagine limitations on their authority that are not spelled out clearly.  In fact, as proper cynics, we do not even give them much credit for constraining themselves when the language seems clear.  The language in SB11 fails on all counts.

So I have begun my own counter-campaign on that premise, and emailed the entire New Hampshire House Republican email list with the email below.  Feel free to use this premise or one similar as you reach out to your own representatives.

And a reminder.  Water, water rights, property rights, and fair taxation are not partisan issues.   It is your well, your water, your rain and run-off , and your money that could be taxed; no matter what we’d like the words in SB11 to mean, there is no specific language in it that seeks first and foremost to protect the people of New Hampshire.  Until such language does exist this effort must be opposed.
