Some years ago, as an intellectual exercise, some friends and I were talking about what we thought was the single biggest advance in human history.
School funding: If you teach a man to read, he can teach himself to fish.
If you give a man a fish, he has to come back when he needs another fish. If you teach a man to fish, he has to come back when he needs to learn something else. Why not teach the man how to learn?

Driving home from PorcFest this evening, I noticed that on I-91, Vermont has combined traditional exit numbers with the new distance-based exit numbers mandated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). For example, one of the exits is marked Exit 18/Milepoint Exit 120. This seemed like a nice way to combine the old and the new.
