I Beg Your Pardon

I am concerned by the large number of my longest-standing friends who have made statements to the effect that Biden’s lying and then pardoning his son is morally acceptable because who wouldn’t lie and pardon their own child.

Viewed through the narrow lens of familial responsibility, this might make sense. But if one steps back and includes the tens of thousands of families whose lives were ruined by Biden’s 1994 crime bill and the local laws it inspired, his actions appear entirely self-serving.

It is a pity that he’s experienced the death of his spouse and child, not to mention the travails of his millionaire junky son.  But if this isn’t merely an attempt to shield himself and his family from prosecution for various crimes committed over the last eleven years, he would have done something to ameliorate the pain and suffering of those prosecuted due to the legislation he authored and championed.  For instance, he could, with the swipe of a pen, decriminalize marijuana.  He could also provide some sort of restitution, dare I say reparations, for those imprisoned under state laws inspired by his crime bill.

However, in the absence of such corrective actions, Biden’s behavior can only be seen as yet another example of a double standard in politics-rules that apply to others but not to him.
