When the Cultural Head-Hunters in Hanover Came for Dr. Seuss, What Did Dartmouth College Do?

Ted Geisel and his wife donated generously to Dartmouth (his Alma mater). The Geisel School of Medicine bears their name, but the College is also your typical Ivy League #Wokeistan. So, when the cultural head-hunters in Hanover came for Dr. Seuss, what did Dartmouth College do?

They said, no, we’re good; from Inside Higher Ed.

At Dartmouth, Geisel’s alma mater, “There are no plans to revisit the use of the Geisel name on campus. We continue to explore opportunities to contextualize and educate from this chapter of the Geisel legacy,” said an email from Diana Lawrence, associate vice president for communications. “We support Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ embrace of inclusivity and its mission to support all children and families with messages of hope, inspiration, and friendship.

In other words, go pound whatever presents itself to you today as sand. We’re not changing the name.

Thank you.

I spend a  good deal of time making fun of Dartmouth, and they deserve every word of it. The Free Speech Intolerance, calling peaceful protesters Nazis. The Sexual harassment settlements, the supporting of Antifa-violence advocating Profs and name-calling professors. Letting out-of-state-students vote (always Democrats) vote in NH. We pull no punches.

But we praise our ideological and political opponents when they do the right thing. It’s only fair; we have the same policy for Republicans. And as Ian demonstrated here, what exactly the problem with this is? Oh, and history and culture changes. If you erase it, we may forget why it changed for good or bad. Humans are very good at forgetting past mistakes.

So, I come not to bury Dartmouth but to praise them, only momentarily, for as noble as this is, there is great evil in the identity politics they advocate.

Thanks for this, but (big picture) you do not impress us with your grasp of history and what happens when you let factions decide what people can read, say and think. It never ends well, even for Dartmouth. If you continue to enable them, they will keep returning until they get their way.

Even if they have to riot to get it because we know how you feel about that, at least until it is directed at Dartmouth.
