Kamala Harris’s anti-Catholic bigotry is just part of the baggage she brings. Kamala is now Joe Biden’s VP pick. Tap, tap, tap on Joe Biden’s shoulder. Hey Joe, your VP pick believes Catholics are unfit to serve in our nation’s courts. Joe, hey Joe, that’s religious bigotry.
Hey Joe you are Catholic. But then again… Biden has spent his entire political career invoking his Catholic faith… and supporting abortion… and forcing nuns to pay for abortions. What’s that First Amendment say again? Free exercise of your_________. Come on Joe fill in the blank. Make things clear to us all.
In the Brian Buescher (2018) nomination hearing Harris posed a series of questions. They insinuate his involvement in the Knights of Columbus disqualified him. The K of C is a charitable Catholic fraternal organization.
Here’s one of her written questions:
Since 1993, you have been a member of the Knights of Columbus, an all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men. In 2016, Carl Anderson, leader of the Knights of Columbus, described abortion as “a legal regime that has resulted in more than 40 million deaths.” Mr. Anderson went on to say that “abortion is the killing of the innocent on a massive scale.” Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?
She went on to ask Buescher whether: He was “aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed marriage equality when [he] joined the organization[?]” and Whether he had “ever, in any way, assisted with or contributed to advocacy against women’s reproductive rights[?]” This is a political litmus test for a judicial appointment.
Democratic senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii went further. She asked Buescher: Whether he intended to “end [his] membership with this organization to avoid any appearance of bias” … in other words, intimating that she would withhold her vote… at least until he had left the Knights of Columbus.
These two Democrats were suggesting that belonging to a Catholic group disqualifies you. If you are Catholic you may not hold a position on the federal bench. In most places that passes for religious bigotry… But maybe not in the U.S. Senate.
Religious test for public office holders are unconstitutional
The group has with millions of members mattered not at all to the pair. The K of C has been an important charity in the U.S. for more than a century. Not that it mattered at all to the pair. To them being Catholic renders an individual unfit to serve as a judge. Religious bigotry is just a nice name for HATE.
To add insult to the injury, Harris used Buescher’s membership in the Knights of Columbus as a pretext. She insinuates that opposition to abortion disqualifies an individual from the bench. It is true the dignity and value of human life are a core component of Catholic teaching. That’s why all lives matter Kamala.
Buescher was confirmed. Harris’s performance in the committee hearing prompted action from senator Ben Sasse. He got the whole Senate to unanimously reaffirm the applicable constitutional clause. It forbids religious tests for public officeholders.
The fact remains; Harris was guilty of reprehensible anti-Catholic bigotry. There’s no reason to believe her views have changed. A vote for Joe is a vote for Kamala which is a vote Kamala Harris’s Anti-Catholic bigotry.
