In a letter dated May 14th, the Democrat caucus of the New Hampshire House believes, that “an order temporarily requiring face coverings in public is necessary for the successful reopening of New Hampshire’s economy.”

In a wing-nutshell:
- The CDC says.
- Other states are doing it.
- We need it to reopen the economy.
- People will feel uncomfortable in public if we don’t.
- Inaction equals permission to ignore guidelines.
One-Hundred and Seventy-Eight NH House Democrats think the state should mandate wearing Facemasks in Public. Including Hanover, NH Democrat Garrett Muscatel, who is at home in Thousand Oaks, California, and will not be affected in any way by the request he “has cosigned.”
That is not all of the Democrats in the NH House if you have an itch to see who is missing.
From my perspective, this is damn convenient of these Dems. Issuing a “request” for a mandatory face mask order the day after I wrote this post on Hygienic Fascism.
This week the same Governor, Chris Sununu, (I was told) said towns could establish their own mask standards. As in, make them mandatory.
Where and how? What power exists at the state level to hand this authority to cities and towns? There isn’t one. They just made it up. And I don’t just mean the authority to suggest you wear a mask in public; I’m talking about the legal force required to punish those who forget or refuse.
Where is that power derived?
The question is, how is it enforced? If there is no enabling legislation, then any disincentive is moot.
It’s a question never asked by the Left, presumably because it is not in doubt, unlike the chance the Governor might say no. In their letter, they write,
While inaction will be viewed as tacit permission to ignore the guidelines that are so necessary to our economic rebound, adopting this commonsense order will protect public health and uphold the regional unity needed for a strong economic reopening across New England.
Democrats pretending they care about the economy is a bit disingenuous. And yes, Deb Stevens did sign the letter, even though she is on the record hoping for virus-laden economic ruin ‘cuz Trump.
As for regional unity, just search GraniteGrok for ‘TCI’ or “Transportation Climate Initiative.” Economic regional “unity” that jacks up our gas taxes to help over-spending, insolvent, Blue States pay for their roads and bridges. Or, maybe, and more likely, to fill a hole or two in their budgets (or just more spending in ours).
No authorizing legislation, no credibility on the economy, and there’s no definitive evidence a mask will make any actual difference. It can’t stop the actual virus when airborne in close quarters. A mask does nothing for cross-surface contamination. And wearing one may make you less healthy in the long run.
I think Governor Sununu should take the same tack with the mask request as he did with TCI. No thanks. We’re not doing that. But I’m not holding my breath. He’s already said (or so I have heard) that towns can decide these things for themselves for which, as noted above, there’s no authorizing legislation.
Its hygienic fascism enforced with mask-shaming mob rule. The only thing the police can do is hand you a copy of the order and tell you it’s not safe. Let’s waste their time with more of that, shall we?
Here’s an idea. Let individuals, employers, businesses, and families decide whether to wear them or to go places that do not require them. No one is making you go anywhere without one, that should be good enough.
