We all understand at this point Congress likes to use bad news to hide the passage of bad policy. Make bad policy into law and the damage becomes nearly irreversible. Some elected officials are trying to attach medical price control to the China Virus bill. This builds socialism and cronyism into our legal and regulatory system.
They are attempting again after failing in their attempt to attach it to last week’s China Virus bill. This terrible idea has been around for many months. It has been waiting for the necessary crisis. So far it has been rejected based on the stink it emits. It reeks of cronyism which is compounded by its socialist basis.
It rightly failed as a stand-alone bill. Now, Congress is wrongly trying to hide it in China Virus legislation. How has Congress made “Surprise Medical Billing” into medical price control? It is a bad policy with a larger than usual helping of cronyism.
Outgoing Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander is attempting to insert it. The rider is a socialist price setting to benefit huge insurance companies. And oh look: From 2013-2018, Alexander’s top donor by far was Blue Cross-Blue Shield. Progressives come with both R & D labels. Neither party has a monopoly on either progressivism or cronyism. Both sides of the aisle are meeting their quotas in both areas.
Alexander is leaving Capitol Hill, sailing into the K Street lobbying sunset. It appears he’s giving a huge goodbye present to his biggest benefactor. Any guesses who his first lobbying client might be when he sets up shop? Let’s look at Alexander’s Big Insurance big wet kiss, shall we?
How this works…
His bill, likely to be slipped into coronavirus legislation, allows the government to set ALL medical payment rates. How would the government do that? Glad you asked. The government would do this using insurance company benchmark rates. It would use the numbers the insurance companies want to receive. That would become the baseline numbers they impose upon the marketplace.
You might call this the harmonic convergence of the height of Socialism and Cronyism. How awful is Congress for trying to do this on a China Virus bill? Even some Democrats think it’s bad: Now is not the time to be doing this. This is not an emergency measure. What is an emergency is to deal with a pandemic. Trying to sneak this in now is not the most prudent decision.
This Crony Socialist medical price-fixing has failed as a stand-alone bill. But will this titanic nonsense make it as a sneak rider on the coronavirus bill? Unfortunately, it is more about legislative wrangling than because it is titanic nonsense. So it is back again, in yet another shameless attempt to insert a rider under cover of China Virus distraction. Hiding medical price control in the China Virus Bill or the Lamar Alexander retirement Act is a very bad idea. Here’s hoping for yet another Nay.
