OBERLIN — Oberlin College planning to lay off 108 employees in its dining services and custodial departments in order to obtain vendor-provided contract services is a symptom of the college’s effort to cut costs as it faces deficit spending, the college announced Tuesday.
And that! is “social” justice.
The excuse they chose is declining enrollment. I bet. And that is a problem faced by a lot of colleges. But especially the ones that make media headlines for being identity politics, social justice, s**t shows.
Evergreen College has been spiraling since the #woke snowflakes rioted. Mizzou had a similar self-character assassination. An alleged swastika in a bathroom no one took a picture of or could prove was ever there set them off. This response made Mizzou the last choice for many on their potential destinations for “higher learning.”
Keene State in New Hampshire had a riot, and even UNH, after its sombrero riot, has complained about enrollment.
In almost every example (Keene is an exception in my list), Identity Politics snowflakes snapped like twigs because the campus culture and curriculum made them that fragile.
Oberlin’s problems are bigger, but so is Oberlin. Not in enrollment but in tuition costs and attitude. Oberlin is an elite liberal arts destination. And while this wasn’t its first dance with fake outrage, it went out of its way to destroy a local business. It was a very public trial, the College lost (and deserved to lose), and it cost them.

As I often note, the cause of the unrest is never a target for house cleaning.
In nearly every case, the social justice curriculum and the identity politics culture they teach is to blame. And yet these departments never get cut, which is ironic.
The late Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen predicted last decade that up to 50 percent of American universities would either close or go bankrupt within 10 years.
These universities and these programs, in particular, are run and taught by postmodernist Marxists. They are high on cost and low on value. And the nature of the learning lends itself to the very sort of behavior that will end them.
Given that America has no shortage of identity politics “experts,” a deficiency in places to provide them with credentials (validation) can’t be a bad thing. That means fewer safe spaces for profs cranking out overpriced unproductive degrees to ply their counterproductive trade.
In other words, Social Justice Education is doing to higher learning what socialism does to everything else – destroying it. Not just its value but its very existence. And I’m not going to weep for that.
