Democrat Congressman Who Voted No on Impeachment Switches Parties

Congressional Demcorat Jeff Van Drew voted not to proceed with impeachment hearings. I’m sure he’s taken some heat from the caucus over that. How much? He’s a Republican now.

He switched to protest the impeachment, and maybe because his District is Trump +5. Maybe.

On Monday, Brigid Harrison, a professor of political science at Montclair State University who had been taking steps toward challenging Mr. Van Drew as a Democrat in a primary, said that she, too, would run to replace him. “I think he’s a traitor. I think it is something that is emblematic of the cynicism of our country.”

Rock and a hard place?

It’s been widely reported that Van Drew has been losing Democratic support in his district because of his opposition to impeachment. Pundits say that by switching parties, he will avoid a primary challenge.

Whatever his reasons, he’s gone “red,” and he’s shedding staffers like trees lose leaves in Autumn. He’ll probably lose a Republican primary. The Democrat party hates him. But if he did it all on principle because of what his former party has done, it’s an honorable political “death.”
