The media does this thing where they get some intern to scour your internet history for two words placed in the wrong order. Proof you are a [bigot, racist, xenophobe, etc.] which then becomes breaking news. The media can now expect similar treatment.
I posited this idea to a few groups about NH Democrats and activists. Comb social media for Democrats being themselves and save them for election season. The Left does it.
Like a lot of brilliant ideas, it didn’t take because it requires a time commitment and most folks on the right have jobs and lives. You need angry live-with-mom basement-dwelling leftists for this sort of work. Or media interns (or water-carrying leftist trolls) when that’s different. And let’s face it. Trolling leftist dribble every day can lead to anger, depression, gender confusion, and thoughts of suicide.
They are just such miserable people. They are also raging hypocrites. So, some other brilliant someone somewhere has found a cabal of activists on the right willing to do what I suggested we do in NH, except to these media hacks.
And they’ve been at it long enough to have built up arsenals of material.
When Fox News personalities complain about Media Matters dumpster-diving on the Internet for “problematic” comments they made years ago, the response is always the same: You said/wrote these words, knowing they’d be public. They didn’t stick a microphone through your bedroom window to eavesdrop. It’s fine if you want to repent now, but we’re all accountable for our public utterances.
The next time some so-called journo drops the next career-ending “look-what-I-found- from-ten-years-ago” remark on someone, there may be a strategic response, ready to launch.
“Four people familiar with the operation described how it works, asserting that it has compiled dossiers of potentially embarrassing social media posts and other public statements by hundreds of people who work at some of the country’s most prominent news organizations.” Bolding added to note that this “damaging information” is available not only to a “loose network of conservative operatives” but also to the loose network of everyone with access to the Internet.
Mutually assured destruction works which are why the so-called journalists are upset. Apparently, using this tactic against them might suppress their freedom of speech or the press, or something. As if that’s not why they do it?
No sympathy here.
We’ve been hanging out in this trench for over a decade taking fire from both sides and doubling down every damn time. That is my advice to the New York Times or anyone else pretending to be in the media that’s complaining. It’s also my advice to Republicans.
Stand behind what you write and say or stop saying it. Defend your peers and colleagues when you know the attacks are BS, out of context, or irrelevant.
Stop running away and letting them define your words for you.
You don’t have to love or even like President Trump, but you can still learn a lesson from him that we’ve been trying to teach for more than 12 years. Progressives are bullies. They are looking for easy targets. Don’t be one.
