House Bill 135 Is All But Dead

Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws. —Plato

SYGLawGraphicSenator Sharon Carson (R) Dist. 14, Chair, Senate Judiciary (Londonderry), sent me a message yesterday afternoon that the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 4-1 on HB 135 to recommend, “Inexpedient to Legislate…”  legislative speak meaning the committee recommends the subject bill be killed and not pass on in the process.

Now House Bill 135, the brain child of Rep. Stephen Shurtleff (D)  Merr 14, Penacook moves to the full Senate, garnering an ITL from the committee. A source tells me at least one Democrat intends to defect and vote against Shurtleff’s bill.

The members of that committee are Senators: Bette Lasky (D)  Vice Chairman Dist 13, Nashua; David Boutin (R) Dist. 16, Hooksett;  Sam Cataldo (R) Dist 6, Farmington; and Donna Soucy (D) Dist. 18, Manchester. It is not known at this time which Democrat voted for HB 135. I am laying odds that is was Senator Lasky.

So HB 135 emerges with an  ITL recommendation from Judiciary. Your state Senators should now vote  Yes! to adopt the committee recommendation of completely kill this bill. Thats right. A “yes vote” on HB 135 now is a “no vote” to adopt this legislation. Most importantly,  urge you Senators to make this a Roll Call vote.

Finally, make it a point to thank those Senators on the Committee who voted to ITL this piece of nonsense legislation.
