“A word to the wise ain’t necessary – it’s the stupid ones that need the advice.” —Bill Cosby
On 9 March, Breitbart’s AWR Hawkins reported that Former Astronaut and Congressman Giffords husband Mark Kelly, “purchased” an AR-15 and subsequently announced on his Facebook page that he was not going to keep the AR-15, which he has yet to pick up from the store.
Days after making the purchases, Kelly wrote on Facebook: I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a .45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes. I don’t have possession of it yet but I’ll be turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do.
Yet, Diamondback Police Supply, the store where Kelly bought the weapons, the store’s owner Douglas MacKinlay provided the following statement to the media on Ammoland:
On March 5, 2013 Mr. Mark Kelly purchased a Sig Sauer 45 caliber pistol and a Sig Sauer M400 5.56 AR style rifle from my company, Diamondback Police Supply Co. in Tucson, AZ. The rifle, having been purchased in trade from another customer, cannot be released to Mr. Kelly or any other customer for a minimum of 20 days in accordance with local ordinances. Mr. Kelly did not ask for any modifications to the rifle, nor are we making any. Once the hold period is up, Mr. Kelly must then show proper identification, complete the Federal Firearms Transfer Record (Form 4473) and successfully complete the NICS background check prior to his taking physical possession of the firearm. [emphasis added]
So, this is just smoke and mirrors. Kelly asserts he will turn the rifle over to the Tuscon Police, so why not purchase a brand new one and avoid the 20-day waiting period imposed on a used one? I suspect he’ll might it for himself.
The former Congresswoman Gifford’s husband Mark Kelly, was trying to, “make a point.” His point is/was how easyit is to acquire firearms. So, I guess I am not seeing the point.
The whole point of a NICS (Form 4473) check is to weed out those who may own firearms and those who may not. If the test subject is a retired Navy Captain who flew a space shuttle, there is not going to be an argument that he or she will pass a background check without a problem. If the point is a general one that guns are easy to buy, here is a newsflash…WE ALREADY KNOW.
