Why Not Cut The Gas Tax?

image source: eppsnetI’ve been suggesting for years now that cutting the cigarette tax would raise more revenue.  That is the point of a tax after all.  And with neighboring states that are stuck on stupid when it comes to the rules and affects of taxation any reduction will increase other commerce as people come over the border to take advantage of the lower price per carton.

So why not cut the gas tax as well?

Fuel prices have crested three-dollars per gallon.  That is a psychological threshold ripe with possibility.  If we knock the tax back and create an opportunity for people to save a little money money on the cost of a fill up, in real dollars as well as the perception of a getting a better deal, the increased volume makes up for the per gallon reduction and adds another opportunity to drive other forms of commerce along the border.
