Do you REALLY need Govt, Cecile Richards?

Politico:

Online gifts to Planned Parenthood have surged by 500 percent since Republicans passed a budget amendment stripping the group of its federal funding…

…Planned Parenthood’s Facebook fans surged 992 percent after the House approved the budget amendment to defund the group in mid-February. More than 810,000 supporters signed its petition denouncing the amendment — more than half of them new users who had never been active with Planned Parenthood prior to the budget debate. The social media activity also drove Planned Parenthood’s surge in online donations.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards:

“But they literally went after Planned Parenthood. For the first time, I think, the next generation of pro-choice women and men saw that the attack was real. It would affect their lives. It wasn’t hypothetical like last year’s debate; it really connected the personal with the political.”

The normal view of most Conservatives is that government should do what people cannot do for themselves, even if banding together.  They do believe, however, that much of what Government does is too much – thus the pushback. It spends too much, does too much, and is not efficient at what it does (and a lot of times, not cost effective and not results driven).  Unfortunately, Liberals and Progressives have it right – offer an additional service by government, offer it for free (to those that use the service), and they’ll never have to stop giving that service "to the people".  Just like the drug dealer on the street corner, this "Entitlement crack" is just the lure at the end of a very long line.  Those that snap at the lure get the hook, and then stay attached to the Government "strings attached"  forever.

Government has morphed from "what is difficult or impossible to do as a group" to seemingly to that of "what people refuse to do for themselves".  I’ve seen this in my own town:

  • The outcry of the community band supporters over a $750 cut in their budget. Oh, but passing the hat is just so beneath them at a performance!  Oh, but asking for money is just so gauche?  Oh, but asking the paid band leader (and all the instrumentalists being volunteers, playing simply for the love of music) to become like them, simply for the love of that music?  Why, when Govt will pay for it anyways?
  • People supporting the Rec N Parks budget when I pointed out the sheer lunacy and laziness of having a town employee advocate for lower lift ticket prices with the county employee at the county owned ski area that, well, is located in our town?  Parents banding together and doing it themselves?  Skip, what ARE you breathing?!?!?!

The same with this Planned Parenthood episode when their Federal funding was threatened in the latest kerfuffle over the Fed budget fight (forgetting, for the moment that WE’RE FREAKIN BROKE HERE FOLKS!).  So often, those looking for the handout say "hey, it’s only a cup of coffee a day" for this program, or that program, you stingy bastard!  How DARE you not give up something you want for something I want your money for!

Well, what are we seeing now?  Simple: those that REALLY want something to exist are finally reaching into THEIR pockets pulling out THEIR wallets and sending THEIR dollars to THEIR charity.  They believe it is sufficiently important to have a vested interest (either personally or altruistically [although I have a real hard time writing "altruistic" concerning supporting an organization that kills unborn babies"]).

I’m simply glad that they (those that believe Govt should be paying for anything that is important to them) are finally demonstrating and showing the fallacy of that argument.

See, you "Can Do it" – and without the Nanny State helping you, right?  Baby steps (oooh – should I have said that?).

Enjoy your coffee.
