If a contractor did a good job for you but a bad job for your neighbor would you force your neighbor to keep rehiring the same contractor? Would you tell your neighbor to hire a second contractor to follow the first and fix the first contractor’s poor work? No.
But this is what happens with children’s education. Many public schools fail to provide a good educational opportunity to all students. And parents have to make up for public school deficiencies if they can.
Professional athletes could significantly help solve the problems that they complain about; unfortunately their disrespectful protests of our country are counter-productive, self-destructive, and alienate people who support and applaud constructive efforts to help America’s less fortunate. The saddest thing is that the athletes’ ill-considered protests may encourage more disobedience of and fights with police which may result in more avoidable deaths.
Professional athletes are welcomed in any American community. They could educate, encourage, and perhaps lead efforts in poor communities to pressure politicians to change the conditions that keep people and communities poor.
Some wounded still hover between life and death. The dead are not yet buried. Americans mourn the dead and injured of the Las Vegas shootings. We wonder how such an event could happen.
And leftists do what they always do; use a crisis to try to take away the rights of the more than 318 million Americans who didn’t harm anyone.
Make no mistake; leftists want to take away the American peoples’ Second Amendment rights. Ignore their denials; occasionally leftists, like Senator Diane Feinstein, admit their goal. They don’t want you to have guns for hunting, for target shooting, for other legal uses, and not even for self-defense.
According to leftists only police and rich leftists’ (whose lives are much more valuable than ours) personal security should have guns.
After each tragedy, e.g., Sandy Hook, Orlando, and Las Vegas, leftists immediately demand restricting the rights of law abiding American people with laws that wouldn’t have avoided any of the tragedies.
The historical part of Alan Vervaeke’s August 22, 2017 column in the Laconia Daily Sun, www.laconiadailysun.com, titled, “Dead soldiers don’t keep the Confederacy alive”, was excellent. Some of his opinions deserve further consideration.
I agree with Vervaeke that it’s shortsighted to remove statues of Confederate warriors from any city. As he says, it’s their heritage. So I don’t understand his seemingly inconsistent suggestion to move them to a “national Civil War monument and museum”. It seems to me that having remembrances nearby make for convenient teaching tools about our and human history; putting them in a remote location hinders learning our good and bad history.
Northerners often jump to wrong conclusions about the Confederacy. Some Southern blacks recognize good things in their heritage and understand that eliminating remembrances of the Confederacy doesn’t solve a single current problem.
Democrat policies and actions are so harmful to most people, especially poor people, that Democrats need scapegoats to divert attention away from the harm their policies do. The rich, especially the 1%, are favorite Democrat scapegoats.
According to Democrats, not only are the “rich” to blame but they’re (supposedly) bad people who don’t pay their “fair share”.
President Obama claimed he would solve everyone’s problems and make the rich pay their “fair share”. But President Obama didn’t solve people’s problems; his policies made most people, except the rich, poorer.
Aren’t New Hampshire’s drug/addiction problems bad enough? How does decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana (MJ) reduce the number of addicts and associated costs? Decriminalization isn’t the answer to reducing our addiction problem.
Lacking personal experience, I refer to President Obama’s director of National Drug Control Policy’s, Michael Botticelli, December 13, 2015 interview on 60 Minutes.
Botticelli, a recovering alcoholic, is “not a fan of legalization” of MJ. He says MJ is linked to lower academic performance and lower IQs, that it exacerbates mental health problems, and that 1 in 9 MJ users become addicted to it.
Does New Hampshire want more mentally impaired citizens?
Democrat politicians ooze concern for the poor and promise wonderful sounding policies to win the votes of gullible, ignorant, and willingly deceived people. But, in practice, Democrat policies hurt the people they are promised to help. The Democrat demanded $15 minimum wage hurts young, uneducated, unskilled, and/or part-time workers.
A recent University of Washington study reports that the increase to $13 on the way to implement Seattle’s (a wealthy city) $15 minimum wage law resulted in a 9% reduction in work hours, a 7% cut in jobs for the lowest wage earners, and an average $125 per month less take home pay. Nearby areas, not subject to Seattle’s $15 minimum wage law, didn’t suffer these job losses, business closings, and wage losses.
War is horrible. People are killed, maimed, emotionally destroyed. Property is destroyed, wealth is consumed. As we saw in WWI, even the winners lose in protracted wars. As we’ve seen in Viet Nam and Iraq, trying to conduct a “gentle”, “compassionate”, or “politically correct” wars just prolongs the killing, suffering, destruction, and cost. If you must fight a war, the best way to lessen the suffering is to end the war as quickly as possible.
This is why the United States and Japan should celebrate the anniversaries of August 6 and 9, 1945. The atomic bombs we dropped on those dates quickly brought WWII to an end saving at least 150,000 American soldier’s lives and perhaps avoiding the extermination of the Japanese people.
WWII in the Pacific was particularly savage. The Japanese believed in death before dishonor, and surrender was considered dishonorable.
It’s often said, “Islam is a religion of peace.” However, the relevant question related to American, especially immigration and refugee, policies is: Are Muslim (leaders and followers) beliefs, values, goals, and behaviors compatible with American society or do they jeopardize the peace, prosperity, freedoms, and even lives of American citizens?
Millions of Muslim refugees in Europe are demanding, threatening, crude, ungrateful, and violent against people and property. We may not want to believe it, but the evidence is clear, google “videos of Muslim refugees in Europe” or see:

Muslim assimilation with their adopted countries and cultures generally isn’t their goal; their goal is to transform those countries into Sharia Law ruled Muslim countries. Muslims pursue that goal by: intimidation, demands, terrorism, and out-breeding (eventually out-voting) the native populations. Thousands of Muslims from immigrant/refugee families in Western countries demonstrate their commitment to Islam by joining ISIS or committing, or been caught planning or supporting, terrorist acts.

Wikileaks has provided a possible answer to the mysteries of why Hillary and Obama ignored the rise of ISIS and promoted/supported the overthrow by radical Muslims of a helpful government in Egypt and a partner in the war on terror, Libya. Democrat Presidents have a disturbing history of weakening our military while strengthening our potential enemies. Hillary will continue these suicidal policies.
Muslim wars and terrorism began with Mohammed, 15 centuries ago. However, their attacks against the US were rare until President Carter abandoned the Shah of Iran, enabling Iran’s takeover by radical Muslims who have fomented terrorism ever since.

Grassroots Democrats can’t be happy with the Democrat Party establishment who saddled them with a Presidential nominee who has a 30 year record of scandals and is now the subject of an active FBI investigation which could result in an indictment and conviction.
No one, not Democrats and not Republicans, wants our country in the position it is in, with the possibility of electing a President who will ultimately be shown to have committed perjury, violated the espionage act, or other major crimes.
And now we learn that it’s not just Hillary who is under FBI investigation but the Clinton Foundation is also under FBI investigation by at least four different FBI offices, for a variety of possible crimes.
Millions of Democrat primary voters rejected Hillary, perhaps concerned about her many scandals and apparent corruption, and voted for Bernie Sanders or other candidates. New Hampshire Democrats overwhelmingly preferred Bernie to Hillary, 60%-38%. Yet, the New Hampshire Democrat party establishment rejected the Democrat voters’ choice and cast their “super-delegate” votes for Hillary.
When asked to identify her accomplishments, Hillary supporters usually respond with mumbling and/or blank stares…and appropriately so.
Frustrated by Hillary’s and Obama’s dismal records, supporters like Carol Stappi (see her 10/13/16 letter, laconiadailysun.com) lash out, making fact-free attacks on their political opponents and maligning critics as driven by hate, racism or sexism.
However, as we criticized Bush, conservatives criticize Obama’s and Hillary’s policies that hurt people: making people poorer, less free, and less safe. We fight for policies that benefit law-abiding Americans who are, or want to be self-supporting, and anyone wanting to live in peace and safety.
Stappi suggests that Trump “advocates sexual assault on women”, that is a lie. If it were true, she would provide a link to the video, she can’t.
Barack Obama and his defenders incorrectly suggest a racial motive to questions about whether Barack Obama meets the Constitutional requirements to be President and about his religion. Some suggest that such questions have never been raised about any other Presidential candidate and are only raised about Obama because he is black. This lie has been repeated long enough.
Questions were raised about the births and Constitutional qualifications of the two previous Republican Presidential nominees, Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain, and about Ted Cruz during this last primary. The Constitutional requirements are critically important; they were the founders’ attempt to ensure that the President’s only loyalty is to our country and the American people.
The original “Obama birther” is Barack Obama himself. For more than ten years, for his personal benefit, Obama let stand his publicist’s claim that he was born in Kenya.
Does the US oppress black Americans? Colin Kaepernick says “Yes”. Is this just the attempt of a “has been” to get noticed or is he right?
Are our black President, Cabinet Secretaries, Governors, Mayors, Judges, Congressmen, Senators, billionaires, millionaires, and thousands of other black officials oppressed? Are college educated and other blacks with good jobs, and those living in nice neighborhoods with good, safe schools for their children oppressed?
However, many poor Americans, including many blacks, live in oppressive conditions; they live in poverty, in areas where jobs, especially good jobs, are scarce, in high crime neighborhoods with frequent shootings, and send their children to poor and dangerous schools. These conditions exist in many inner cities.
These cities are almost exclusively controlled by Democrat politicians.
