Most of what we’ve heard about the Gaza Flotilla revolves around Muppet Greta Thunberg’s participation. She’s the high-profile attendee. The name or face of a 52-vessel effort to get mostly symbolic humanitarian aid past the Israeli military blockade. Israel isn’t going to let them pass, and they all likely know this, but the boats are out there anyway, trying to increase awareness.
It’s a stunt, and it has gotten some unwanted attention.
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a high-profile convoy of boats heading to Gaza, has been thrown into turmoil after one of its activists publicly came out as queer. The self-described “queer militant” Saif Ayadi accused opponents of exploiting his sexuality to undermine the flotilla in a social media post on Thursday (Australian time).
It comes after GSF co-ordinator Khaled Boujemaa announced his resignation on social media while protesting the presence of LGBTQ activists in the flotilla.
“We were lied to about the identity of some participants in the vanguard of the flotilla. I accuse the organisers of having hidden this aspect from us,” Mr Boujemaa said.
Mr Boujemaa claimed that Tunisians had been deceived after donating to the cause without being made aware that there was a queer activist involved.
Other figures also condemned Mr Ayadi’s presence as crossing a red line when he announced that he was queer in a public post.
Imagine their dismay. Muslims funding a propaganda stunt meant, at least superficially, to raise awareness of Muslims in Gaza, which includes a gay Arab.
What I find truly interesting is that the gay Arab is blaming the Zionists for ” trying to use his queer identity to attack the flotilla and break its unity.”
I would not be surprised if “Zionists” capitalized on the knowledge as counter-propaganda. Hamas is the problem in Gaza. The people doing business as Palestinians who let them attack Israel from Gaza are the problem. The militant nature of the intimidation Hamas uses to ensure the people in Gaza have no choice is the problem. Hamas killing gay Arab activists is a problem, but that is who they are, and anyone with an ounce of sense knows where any “aid” will end up, even symbolic aid.
In the hands of Hamas.
They are the biggest threat to Saif Ayadi, and even he knows that, so blaming “Zionists” is amusing because while Zionists wouldn’t throw Ayadi off a tall building, Hamas would. As would many of its Muslim funders.
