Harris, Hamas, Haniyeh

by
Op-Ed

The political chief of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated in Tehran.  Iranian TV reports he was killed in a raid on his home.  The Times of Israel says Prime Minister Netanyahu told the White House of the intention to conduct the operation.

Kamala apparently was too busy doing sorority things to take the meeting.  There’s no reaction yet from the White House.  Ms. Harris, just days ago told Mr. Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza.  Why did Israel strike in Iran and Lebanon?

It’s hard to see how this doesn’t lead to escalation in the region. The latest out of Lebanon is the IDF struck a building in Beirut, claiming the life of the #2 Hezbollah commander, Mr. Fuad Shukr.  He was killed in a residential complex next to a hospital by an Israeli missile strike.

If this is true, it means justice is served for his many victims.  Among his victims are the 12 children who were killed over the weekend in the Golan Heights playing on a soccer field when a Hezbollah rocket landed on them.  Israeli officials say Mr. Shukr organized that strike.

Then there are the families of the 220 US Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers who died back in the year 1983 while sleeping at the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut at the time.  That’s when Mr. Shukr’s suicide bomber drove a truck into their barracks.

Also, in 1983, a separate suicide bomber drove a different truck into the barracks housing French forces, killing fifty-eight troops and six civilians.  There have been many more actions in between for which Mr. Shukr bears responsibility.

It’s nearly inconceivable Iran’s new President and the Ayatollah will roll over and accept not just one but two audacious Israeli hits. Arab and Persian media is replete with stories.  The eyes of the Middle East and the world are on them and their response.
