Are our tax dollars subsidizing bad behavior and helping to facilitate the breakdown of the family?

As noted in this prior posting, NH’s Cornerstone Policy Research joined other national policy and research groups across the nation Tuesday to release a first-time ever research report that quantifies the annual taxpayer cost from high rates of divorce and unmarried childbearing. The report tells us that here in the Granite State A large percentage of … Read more

Attention Wal-Mart shoppers…

Wal-Mart
.
In recent years, I have come to appreciate and admire the marvel of American logistics and ingenuity that is Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, others don’t see it in the same light. In a number of posts stretching back over the past year and more, I have written quite a bit about the ongoing campaign against Wal-Mart by labor unions and their friends in the Democratic Party . In a posting from last November, I reported:
The Democratic war against Wal Mart moves on. With the socialist-leaning party in power, one wonders if the assault on the premier American retailer/ logistics giant will intensify and begin to cause the company real damage.
As I said in this one,
Wal-Mart represents the latest target in the left’s war on successful American businesses.
Last October, I discussed the vehicle chosen by those joining in the assault: the WakeUpWalMart campaign. At the time, I was writing about the NEA teacher’s union’s joining with that group as they attacked Wal-Mart. As found on their website, one sees the union roots of the effort:

Participation in the campaign, which is organized by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), the AFL-CIO union with primary jurisdiction for employees of retail stores, was approved by the NEA Executive Committee in May 2005 and endorsed by the 2005 Representative Assembly in July 2005.

Of course, just because those on the outside looking in say something is bad, it turns out, sometimes, when you consult people actually having firsthand information, the real story turns out to be quite different. In this post about a group comprised of Wal-Mart employees (Working Families for Wal-Mart), I pointed out:

I know several people that work for Wal Mart, and they genuinely like their jobs. Nobody forces anybody to work there.

Followed by this:

Nobody forces anyone to shop there. Imagine that- willing employees serving willing customers- What a concept!

Indeed. Did you know that Wal-Mart, under constant attack by those who always claim to be for "the little guy," saves the average American family who willingly patronizes them more than $2,500 per year? And now, for those willing customers, there’s a way to get involved and help defend the company that provides such a level of satisfaction: Wal-Mart New England’s Customer Action Network (CAN).

Is NH Civil Union Legislation Based on Lies?

THIS WILL LIKELY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT POST I HAVE WRITTEN THUS FAR. WHILE I KNOW IT’S LONG, PLEASE MAKE TIME TO READ THE ENTIRE POST, AND ATTACHED LINKS IF POSSIBLE, SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE AN EDUCATED DECISION ON WHAT REALLY IS “THE NEW HAMPSHIRE WAY” ACCORDING TO THE MAJORITY OF ITS CITIZENS, NOT ACCORDING TO WHAT POLITICIANS TELL US.

AND, IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOVERNMENT BY AND FOR THE PEOPLE, WE NEED TO ACT BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE, EVEN IF IT’S JUST POSTING YOUR COMMENT HERE. I SINCERELY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME.

That’s right New Hampshire; our Governor signed the Civil Union bill, click here, based on a pack of lies that it’s “discrimination” against homosexuals if it’s not adopted into law. It was also propounded to be a “civil rights issue” as well by the Democratic Party. Is this true? Read on to see if you agree or disagree based on the latest scientific research.

As I’ve said before, (click here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here for other relevant posts from me and other Groksters) there is no scientific consensus that homosexuals are “born that way.” Homosexuality is not the equivalent of being born black which is unchangeable…well, unless perhaps you’re Michael Jackson, ha! Again, Are Civil Unions really a “civil rights” issue? Can homosexuals choose not to practice homosexuality?

Quoting Douglas A. Abbott Ph.D., in his July 2007, Myths and Misconceptions About Behavioral Genetics and Homosexuality, click http://www.narth.com/, and you’ll easily find his article under Top Stories, currently sixth from the top, he concludes:

“I believe that the genetic evidence for homosexuality is just not there. It’s the values and politics of homosexuals and their supporters that is driving the gay gene agenda, not good science.”

Then from the “Born that Way” theory, A. Dean Byrd, Ph.D., MBA, MPH, one of the world’s leading scientists who works at the cutting edge of DNA and Head of the Human Genome Project, he states:

“Homosexuality Is Not Hardwired!”

Breaking News: Second Right-to-Know lawsuit in Belknap County in less than a month!

Petitioners assert that the Chair of the Belkap County Convention & administrative assistant violated NH’s Right-to-Know law on Monday, July 23rd.

.
.
Following on the heels of being found guilty of Right-to-Know (RTK) law violations, the chairman of the Belknap County Convention and the official keeper of the records conspired, according to petitioners Thomas A Tardif and Doug Lambert, to deny them immediate access to unsealed meeting documents as required by NH’s Right-to-Know law RSA 91A.
.
On Monday, July 23rd, Mr. Tardif and Mr. Lambert submitted a written RTK request for three specific documents referred to in the May 29th non-public session minutes of the Belknap County Convention regarding the appointment of the replacement sheriff. After confirming that they were in her possession, the Administrative Assistant to the Belknap County Commissioners, the official record-keeper for the County Convention, denied Tardif and Lambert the opportunity to inspect the requested public documents. Upon the insistence of Mr. Tardif, the Administrative Assistant called Convention Chair Stephen H. Nedeau who instructed her to deny us access.
.
The RTK law notes, in RSA 91-A:4, I,
Every citizen during the regular or business hours of all such bodies or agencies, and on the regular business premises of such bodies or agencies, has the right to inspect all public records, including minutes of meetings of the bodies or agencies, and to make memoranda, abstracts, and photographic or photostatic copies of the records or minutes so inspected, except as otherwise prohibited by statute or RSA 91-A:5.
It further states, in 91-A:4, IV,
Each public body or agency shall, upon request for any public record reasonably described, make available for inspection and copying any such public record within its files when such records are immediately available for such release.
Once again, within a span of under four weeks, the Belknap County Convention, in this case its chair, finds itself facing charges of violating the law. Once again, it is alleged, the
LAWMAKERS HAVE BECOME LAWBREAKERS.
One has to wonder when they are going to "get it?"

Now, we wait… Will the NH peoples’ right to an open government be upheld… or eroded?

.
Today was the hearing for the Right-to-Know suit filed by me and former Laconia Mayor Tom Tardif under NH’s Right-to-Know law (RSA91-A). (Click here to read a prior posting with the details and here for the Citizen newspaper’s reporting on the matter) As expected, our elected representatives vigorously defended their actions instead of simply dropping back and doing the right thing in compliance with the law. You know– default in the direction of openness. Instead, it’s time to circle the wagons…
.
One of the things we asked the court for was to deny the assumption of the Sheriff’s position scheduled for Monday, based on our contention that the secret ballot used in an open meeting by the Belknap County Convention was illegal. Unfortunately, the judge decided that no harm would come from this happening, no matter what he ultimately rules on our overall case. While he’s right that the matter is one of process versus whether the person is suited for the job, which nobody questions, it validates the egregious action. Furthermore, I still believe this leaves the county wide open to future messy litigation as defense attorneys seek exoneration of clients using all available means, at undoubtedly great cost to the taxpayers.
I believe we successfully made our overall point and will be found correct by the judge. What was interesting was that the county’s attorney framed the convention’s action as being an exception to the Right-to-Know law because they held an ELECTION, which is exempted from the statute. The problem for the county is, if that were true, then the election would have to be under the auspices of one of the three types as defined by NH’s election laws. If that’s the case, then the county violated ELECTION law instead of the RIGHT-TO-KNOW law. Either way, a body comprised of those we elect to MAKE the laws has broken some law, thus causing our honorable

lawmakers to become lawbreakers!

Here is the testimony I gave to the Belknap Superior Court today at 9:00AM:

LHS GAY/STRAIGHT ALLIANCE INSPIRED BY RECEPTION AT STATEHOUSE

by Ron Tunning
The Laconia Daily Sun
Saturday, April 14, 2007
.
CONCORD — “It was a blast,” said Jon Arsenault.
.
“It was so awesome,” contributed Steven Gonzalez.
.
“It was so much more interesting and informative than we’d ever expected,” added Jessie Dawson.
.
Those were only some of the remarks overheard from a group of Laconia High School students who spent Tuesday at the N.H. State House as the official guests of Reps. Judie Reever and Beth Arsenault.
.
The contingent, which included 18 students and three adults, were greeted upon their arrival by the two Laconia House members in the Capitol’s “Hall of Flags” before being led on a tour of the historic building by Virginia Drew, the Director of the NH General Court Visitors Center while the two representatives hurried off for a Democratic caucus being held prior to the opening of the day’s legislative session.
.
Following a visit to the Senate Chamber and a walk along the building’s corridors during which Drew offered a running dialogue on the history of the building and its many historic artifacts, the group was escorted to the gallery overlooking Representative Hall just as the legislative session was set to commence.
.
As House protocol demands, the students, members of the LHS Gay/Straight United, were welcomed by House members by a standing round of applause. “We were made to feel so welcome,” said a surprised Dawson, who serves with Gonzalez as co-president of the organization. “We really weren’t certain how we’d be received.”

Children of the state.

I started this post with the assumption, based on the absence of any news articles, that the NH Catholic Diocese, of which I am a member, had given up on any attempts at stopping the repeal of NH’s parental notification law. Further investigation revealed I was wrong, the Diocese has, in fact taken a stand and issued a letter stating its position. Good for them. A letter from the Bishop in this past Sunday’s bulletin might have been helpful, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
.
As a believer in parental rights when it comes to children, the passage of NH HB 184, the repeal of the right of parental notification prior to a minor girl receiving an abortion, is something that must not happen. Call or email your state senators and representatives today. The clock is ticking.
.
This is the letter from the Diocese:
Hon. David E. Cote, Chairman
Judiciary Committee
New Hampshire House of Representatives
Room 208—Legislative Office Building
Concord, New Hampshire 03301
.
Dear Representative Cote and Members of the Committee:
.
As Chancellor of the Diocese of Manchester and on behalf of Bishop John B. McCormack, I am writing to express our opposition to HB 184.  The Parental Notification Prior to Abortion Act recognizes the fundamental and constitutionally-protected role of parents in caring for their children and should not be repealed.
.
The Catholic Church vigorously promotes the dignity and sanctity of both human life and the family as essential elements of human society.  The Diocese of Manchester strongly supported enactment of the Parental Notification Prior to Abortion Act.  Indeed, when its constitutionality was questioned before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the United States Supreme Court, the Diocese of Manchester, along with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, urged the Courts to uphold the law.
.
Diocesan support is rooted firmly in the natural law that when any significant issue confronts a family member, the family should come together to resolve it.  A pregnant minor will benefit from parental involvement as she faces a life-altering decision that involves not only her unborn child, but also her own physical health and emotional well-being.  Parents have an equally fundamental interest in the welfare of their children as well as a right and a responsibility to care for them.

Bush on energy and how the Dems will help. Sure they will.

In his radio address this week, President Bush speaks about energy. It all sounds good, but I can’t help but think that all of the planning that’s aimed at curbing consumption of oil and its refined products is ultimately going to consume greater amounts of my shrinking take-home earnings. My apologies for sounding so cynical about this, but I think you’ll agree with my assesment. Read on…
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning.
.
Last Saturday, I addressed the annual retreat of Democrats from the House of Representatives. I thanked the Members of the new majority for their service in Congress. And we discussed our responsibility to work together on a wide range of issues — from fighting the global war on terror, to making health care more affordable, to balancing the Federal budget.
Of course, the Dems want to surrender instead of trying to win the war, nationalize 1/6 of the US economy, and "balance" the federal budget by raising taxes on "the rich", AKA anybody with a job. Other than that, though, I’m sure they’ll "work together" with President Bush to make things right. He continues:
One area with great potential for bipartisan cooperation is energy policy. The need for action is clear. Our Nation’s reliance on oil leaves us vulnerable to hostile regimes and terrorists, who could damage our economy by disrupting the global oil supply. A spike in oil prices anywhere in the world could lead to higher prices at gas pumps here in America. And burning oil and gasoline creates air pollution and greenhouse gases.
Which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on whose scientific "evidence" one believes. I agree with being vulnerable by relying so heavily on oil that comes from bad places. That’s why, even though we don’t like it, we have to "fix" the bad places. Oh, and we should just drill for more oil in our own backyard, like in ANWR and offshore.
Republicans and Democrats both recognize these problems. We agree on the solution: We need to diversify our energy supply and make America less dependent on foreign oil. The best way to do that is by developing new energy technologies here at home. So the Federal government has provided more than $10 billion over five years for research into alternative sources of energy. Our scientists and engineers have made great progress, and our Nation is now on the threshold of dramatic breakthroughs in clean energy technology.
I’m not sure we "agree on the solution", as I’m pretty sure the Dems would have us riding bicycles or driving lawnmower-like cars (other than your Algore types who are just too darned important) while at the same time banning windmills and tearing down dams to save the fishes.
