The Virginia Special election to amend the state constitution to allow gerrymandering represents a historic crossroads not only for American history, but for both political parties and the voters as an electoral body. For VA state democrats, it is the beginning of an unforgivable direct assault on the sovereignty and security of Virginia’s electoral system. For the GOP (which is weak in northern VA), it is a defining moment that Virginia voters should mercilessly begin to scrutinize the northern GOP based on their response. Furthermore, it is a call to action for the people of Virginia to learn their history and understand the implications of statewide elections as well.
Despite the anger and frustration of the anti-SPAMBERGER voters, objective analysis from people like Dr. Steve Turley, whose analysis is worth looking at, has offered some interesting facts and history lessons. In a political analysis video released last week, Dr. Turley notes that popular opinion has shifted 14 points to the right in VA, as measured by comparing the percentage of support for the VA governor race to the percentage in this referendum vote. Also, the language in the ballot was not neutral.
A more interesting prospect, per Dr. Turley, is that President Trump is considering signing an executive order that brings Arlington County and Alexandria City back under the DC jurisdiction. In his analysis, Dr. Turley highlights that Virginia retroceded their land to DC in 1790, permanently. However, President James Polk retroceded that land back to Virginia in 1847 to protect slavery in Northern Virginia in response to the District of Columbia at the time positioning itself to abolish slavery.
It really does pay to know history and know it correctly and well. If President Trump does wind up signing this EO, it can invalidate enough votes to reverse the impact of the referendum, even without the court’s involvement, as well as dismantle the Democrats’ gerrymandering machine entirely.
