PAYNE: The Rebirth of Americanism

The inspiring words of Patrick Henry breathe fire in the holy cause of liberty: “We are not weak if we make proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power…. The battle…. is not to the strong alone: It is to the vigilant, the active, the brave.”  The roaring crowd hearing those words exploded – “to arms!,” After, Henry ended with: “Give me liberty or give me death!” Tens of thousands followed sacrificing lives, fortunes, and sacred honors. Today, we are not weak! The great God of our Founders still places power in our hands. We owe to every generation that endured the times, trying their souls with vigilance, action, and bravery, so that Henry’s holy cause of liberty is passed on.

After America’s WWII triumphant victory, sitting at the top of world power, too many forgot the cost in lives of hundreds of thousands of our finest youth. The naive belief that the United Nations would end all wars was born.  Communist media propaganda shields the activity of Soviet Agents working silently within the government to keep the people happy. Millions ignored the defection of Soviet Agent Whitaker Chambers, who became Senior Editor of Time magazine. Meanwhile, another Soviet Agent, Alger Hiss, became a major drafter of the UN Charter. The Army-McCarthy Hearings also exposed Hollywood communists. Too many were not listening.

In the mid-fifties, patriotic invincibility was blind, and nearly every young man wanted to be a soldier.  Thank God many were not sleeping. Mr. Robert Welch brought his patriotic business associates together in December of 1958, in Indianapolis, for a two-day seminar. Their mission was to evaluate socialism around the world, especially within our government, and develop a plan of action to confront this evil threat. This seminar became The Blue Book of The John Birch Society with: “Less government, more responsibility and with God’s help a better world.”

The Blue Book was a call to action for all races, religious, and ethnic groups to come together to promote”Education as our total product and truth as our only weapon.” Welch, having observed for years the significant loss of liberty resulting from uninformed electorates voting for self-promoters, proposed a solution: to educate “we the people” with the knowledge needed to control the behavior of our leaders. Teaching back-to-basics Americanist constitutional principles, he knew this power placed in the minds and hearts of citizens, with God’s help,  would be a powerful deterrent to governmental control.

Seeing a need to teach a moral foundation of what is right and what is wrong according to the Constitution of the United States. Just as individual behavior must be limited by the moral code of The Ten Commandments, the behavior of government must be limited by the Constitution of the United States, which they are sworn to uphold. Mr. Welch knew: ”A good government is one where the people obey the rulers and the rulers obey the law.” The late John McManus, President Emeritus of The John Birch Society, in “Overview of America,” brilliantly looks at politics and how Americanism fits in the political spectrum.
